Warcraft 2 was my first exposure to the series and it fucking blew me away. Not only was the campaign 10/10 but I spent hundreds of hours in the map editor. So much so that when my old desktop bricked, my dad took it to a repair company, and they let us take home a rental PC to use in the meantime (I watched SO much porn on that thing), and the first thing I did with the rental was install WC2 and get back to work.
I want to say that WC1 was a product of its times, but even then it didn't really play like most RTS games. Having to do shit like buildings HAVE to be built next to roads.

Maybe you just haven't gone back to it in a long time or you sucked as a kid, but the campaign of 2 is such a bore. The AI is so lazy and will maybe every 10 minutes send 3-4 guys at your base. You never feel like you're in danger and can take as much time as you want. I mean SC1's AI wasn't much better, but at least it was SOMEWHAT aggressive.
Blizz knew the real reason we were playing 2, otherwise they never would have made B.Net Edition to relieve us of working around the bullshit we had to do to get the multiplayer working.

Not really. Most of it is inconsequential "the orcs are starting shit here, repel them" or "the humans have fortified their position at the town of *insert name here*. Crush them in the Warchief's name!".
Yeah they make it sound important, but that's what a lot of it comes down to. Aside from the ending missions, killing Medihv/Blackhand/Grisela, and saving Lothar, most of it is just filler.

Reasoning and backstory for each mission, a map to show where things are going on. Plenty of characters. Manual filled with POV backstory for the game.
