No joke though, being able to switch it out every two years for the newest model for only $99 was a good deal. It's obvious why eMachine was the only company to ever do it.

because files were much smaller than they are today, same with how 56k was the pinnacle of communication technology a while back

Fuck I feel old

> tfw I was living like this up until 2012
You know, I really had no clue how advanced other peoples computers were until recently.
Up until 2012 I had a Windows 2000 Compaq laptop that had a 20 GB harddrive.
And a desktop with an 80GB harddrive, intel pentium or something, 512 MB of ram.

My desktop before was from 2003, I think it might have been kinda advanced when it came out, it had a DVD drive, 256 MB of RAM, but I used that up until 2009 or so. I think that had 40GB of space.

Files were like super small?

No.
The second desktop ran up to N64 emulators well enough.

I'm running on a 6½ year old PC that wasn't even high range at the time.

I put in a new graphics card what, 3 or 4 years ago?

I'm currently considering buying new fans, as they're getting noisy.

Try windows 3.11.
>>
>>344188091
things like that are possible. up until 2011 I had a Duron 850MHz, a 40GB harddrive(taken from another computer, before that I hat 9 gigs), 256MB RAM and a radeon 9600 pro. I knew better pcs existed because my friends had them but my parents always had other expenses to take care of so my pc had to wait.
I'm still using the pc they got me in 2011 and haven't upgraded it at all because I never feel like saving up for parts
I'm getting really tired of my Athlon II X3 and GTX 460

How'd you feel if I said Norton Commander?
>>

I was in a similar situation though not quite as bad.

I got a refurbished Dell 4600 in 2004. It was my first pc. It had a P4 2.8Ghz CPU, 512MB of RAM, and integrated graphics. Had a 40GB HDD but I later added a second. I was using a 1024x768 display. I eventually bought a Geforce 6200 and later a Geforce 6800. Also upgraded the RAM to 1GB.

I used that pc until 2010 when I built a new one.
It was huge upgrade. i5 750, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD and an HD 5850. Also bought a 1080p monitor. I couldn't believe the difference in performance.

On the 2003 desktop I mostly played Toontown and free trials of those downloadable games that all cost 19.99 on those websites.
On the other desktop I played emulated games and stuff, like I said it ran up N64 well so... This also applies to the laptop I had. It was Windows 2000 but the specs weren't so bad I guess.

The main thing with these computers was having to fix them literally all the time.
In the end I'm honestly grateful, my knowledge on computers would be normalfag level if I didn't have to fix something every 10 minutes. Since actually getting a computer that's (mostly) up to date, comes installed with all drivers available, and isn't running on 10 year old hardware, I've really had no reason to troubleshoot or do anything too advanced at all and my knowledge is waning.

I actually had that pc, what it really meant is that you could trade it in for credit to get a new one.
