Fire Emblem developed independently of Tolkien-esque fantasy, aiming more for low fantasy with some elements of high fantasy for the sake video games, along with some elements of various European mythologies(and Japan, in Fates).
So no elves when everybody's more focused on kingdoms, and magic is a glorified documented science, especially in the 3DS entries.
Also pointy ears are reserved for people that are part-dragon.

Didn't really care much for Will or Rebecca in 7. Not that I didn't like them or not use them, I just much prefered Rath, since not only was he a fantastic Archer but had the mobility of a Knight and could use swords once he promoted.
