it helps, but you don't need it. i found a LOT more driving around than I did walking. and i don't just mean because i was covering more space, either. just going down one stretch of road netted me a lot more encounters than walking down that same stretch of road. I got 1 encounter with a zubat when i went for a walk this morning, but i got like 4 with polywags, ratatas, zubats, drowzees, hypnos, spearows, pidgeys driving down the same road.

Look at the character design, it's more realistic and "mature" than the mainline pokemon games.
Pokemon Go is targeted to long time fans, now adults that have little time to play mainline games but they can play a short session on their mobile phone while they go to lession or work.
That's why there are no tutorial, adults can figure out alone how to play.

there isn't any gameplay, you walk around and when you feel your phone vibrate you see pokemon show up in the overworld. you pick one to catch and you just flick pokeballs at them til it sticks. the only "battling" in it is the gym battles, where you find a gym and station your pokemon there. other people will go to that gym and challenge your pokemon. if they beat it they can then take over the gym and put their pokemon there.
