>going by new Pokemon, I'd probably say Gen VI, it had little but pretty much all of them are very likable, there was also tons of under the hood polish and improvements to communication made that people take for granted
>Gen IV probably has the best games overall with both Platinum and HGSSand I personally think DP is the best kickoff of a generation we've had
>favorite region is Johto, so Gen II there, and I love its general aesthetic too both in-game and in official art

Really they all have their points. Can't really easily nail a single generation as best.
I played in the order of gens 1, 3, 4, and then 2 with Crystal. Then I played 5 and 5-2.
By far my favorite was gen 2. Mainly because I loved the asshole rivals MUCH more than the 'best friend' 'rivals'. Plus, 2 was basically a straight improvement over 1.

I actually did emulate Gold when I was 12. Because I was that excited to play the new pokemon games, I wanted to play them even though I didn't know Japanese.
I named my Otachi I caught whatever kana I could that looked like english letters, so it wound up with a name I called "Toll". Emulation was glitched though, so I didn't even know the day / night cycle was a thing until I reached Mt Silver.

Gen III was shit, Hoenn was a shit region.
Gen I was shit, too, imbalanced as fuck and terrible art, it only gets points for being the first of its kind.
Honestly, my favorite Pokemon generation was Gen V. Gen V at least made a passing attempt at having an interesting story; a "villain" who existed in a morally grey area and whose plan (liberate all the Pokemon) called attention to some of the stranger logic of the Pokemon universe, and who may or may not have been a Pokemon himself.
The game created an entirely new set of Pokemon, with no returning mons until the postgame.
These were interesting things to do. I feel like they were severely underappreciated, and since then The Pokemon Company has crawled back into its comfort zone like a fucking coward because all anyone did with Gen V was shit-talk the mon designs.
