Let's talk about SMT II. I just finished the Playstation version. I was surprised by how easy it was. I didn't even fuse or recruit demons nearly as much as I did in the first game (because because they seemed much more apt to tell me to fuck off or run off with whatever I gave them in this game). I mostly just autobattled my way through the game with guns, even most bosses I took down that way, throwing Tarukaja into the mix once I got Cu Chulainn. I didn't even need Divine Retribution which I've heard people say it a skill I should have aimed for. Would have made battles faster, but hardly necessary.

I think it was better than the first game in most aspects, though nothing's quite like trying to stop the world from ending, failing, and then seeing the aftermath. Also, the backtracking, holy shit that drove me crazy. I'd heard it was bad, but I didn't think it would be as bad as it was. It felt like the developers tried to stretch out the game's playtime. The non-backtracking bits were better though, and the dungeons didn't even annoy me as much for the most part.

What do you think about SMT II, /v/? What's the best route? I've heard many people say Chaos had a great ending, so I went with that this time just to see what it was like. Does Tokyo Millennium get destroyed in the Neutral route too?

And after this, I can finally get to SMT III, which I've been looking forward to for awhile now since most people seem to like it so much.

You don't really need it, it just helps in the end game against YHVH because he's such a fucking damage sponge. Maybe the PS1 version doesn't have that rollover bug that knocks your damage back down to almost nothing if you use Tarukaja more than two or three times, I dunno. That thing was really annoying.

>Maybe the PS1 version doesn't have that rollover bug that knocks your damage back down to almost nothing if you use Tarukaja more than two or three times, I dunno. That thing was really annoying.

Well I didn't notice anything like that. Even against YHVH I just auto-battled, stopping momentarily to apply healing as needed. I actually didn't even have a weapon for Hiroko that could hit him, so I just hit him with Aleph and Lucifer and he went down without too much trouble. Well, it sounds like I won't be able to auto-battle my way through SMT III.

Nocturne is the best SMT and one of the best games of all time.
>>
>>344129840

So I've heard. I certainly won't go in expecting that or I'll just be disappointed, I learned my lesson about expecting a game to be life changing a long time ago. Still, I expect fun and frustration.

Yeah, you would definitely have noticed, your damage output drops to about 1 or 10 damage and it can get stuck that way for the remainder of the fight. I never tried autobattling with YHVH, Satan or Beelzebub simply because of their instant kill attacks. Beelzebub was particularly annoying because his Mamudoo was accurate enough to take both Aleph and Hiroko out in one move for an instant Game Over.
Well, it sounds like I won't be able to auto-battle my way through SMT III.
Probably not, no. The mechanics aren't nearly as easy to break as in SMT I and II. Resistances become a lot more important because getting it right gets you tons of turns whilst fucking up can get you functionally stun-locked to death. Good game though.

I played and completed SMT I a long time ago, but was very bored of the random battles and simple combat even in boss battles. It felt like a chore to play.

I still haven't played SMT II.

Does the PS1 version have a translation now?
>>
>>344130608

Haven't played it yet, Sly. It's on my list, but probably sometime after the main series. Still got the rest of the main games, Strange Journey, if, and the DDS games to do, and probably the Raidou games and Devil Summoner games. Everyone seems to love DDS, but I know less about those than most. Well, truth be told I know almost nothing about the Raidou and Devil Summoner games as well.

>>344130684

Yeah I know how you feel, it got kind of boring in the middle of the game. I only completed it because of autism or something. I figured SMT II would bore me too, but really, I was usually having fun when not backtracking.

>>344130919

'Fraid not. Hopefully someday.
>>
>>344128682
Anyone know who the demon on the front cover is?
>>
>>344128682
I think you miss a moderate amount of content depending on the route, with Neutral having the most. In Chaos you miss the entirety of Lucifer's Castle along with the optional boss fight with Beelzebub. Which is rough because he can wipe your entire team in one turn with Mudoon, but it's still pretty easy by Extra Boss SMT standards. Law I think skips almost the etirety of Eden.

Isn't it just a normal Angel from different angles?

Angel. Amusingly enough, they look completely different in SMT II.

>>344132606

>In Chaos you miss the entirety of Lucifer's Castle

Say what? I had to walk all the way up to the top of that place twice. You're right about Beelzebub though. I almost went Neutral, but I was interested in what made Chaos such a good ending.

>>344129840
ahaha

my opinion is that the fucking translation should be released already

Yeah, the new design was for the PSX games from memory
>>
>>344132834
>Say what? I had to walk all the way up to the top of that place twice.
Oh, I guess I remembered wrong. Maybe you skip Kuzuryu or something, but I think Lucifer teleports you somewhere and you skip stuff you'd have to do in the Neutral route. Skipping Kuzuryu is nothing to dwell on though, you can stun-lock him completely with Masakado's Sword and then autobattle him without any risk at all. I think I pressed auto-battle once, went and did something else for a minute or so, came back and he was dead. Damn, SMT II was broken.
>>
>>344133296

Yeah, it's Kuzuryu that you skip. Only time Lucifer teleported me was when we went to Eden, but I got kicked out and had to go through the Center anyway.

I kind of feel that SMT II has an inverted difficulty curve. You start the game with just Aleph on his own armed with shitty weapons and maybe a couple of recruitable demons with meh stats and skills. Then as you progress you get better demons with good skills (buff, etc.), Hiroko gets useful spells, you get broken swords and guns that hit everything or multiple times and inflict broken as fuck status effects...and the game doesn't really do much to allow for that. I think the only problem I had was against enemies that were resistant/immune to both gun and sword, and those guys were always weak to either Death or Expel anyway.

>>344134367
Pixie is best demonfu, forever.
>>
I just recently beat it myself. While it has a lot more features over SMT1, I ended up enjoying SMT 1 more. The backtracking and masakado revival was annoying, the sudden stat requirements like the massive speed you need for the final boss was a pain, and the fact that it was so easy I beat most of the game without demons took away from the experience. I still enjoyed it though. Once I found the Lions War Fan I steamrolled everything with that for most of the game until it got deleted from my inventory somehow.
>>
>>344136351

>Once I found the Lions War Fan

I don't think I found that. I just used stuff I bought or got from the Casino.
>>
>>344136661
It did great damage against bosses, but for random encounters I just used the death colt with mute bullets for most of the game

>>344128682
Have you played Kyūyaku Megami Tensei? It's quite fun, despite its age.

The PS version is a lot more playable than the SNES version. Also, doing the Masakado quest without a guide or map layouts is literal torture.

I really wanted to like SMT2, but the backtracking really did just ruin it for me. Despite having improved demon fusion mechanics and a superior interface compared to SMT1, it felt so, so much more tedious to play.

Also it's like ATLUS couldn't balance an RPG until Soul Hackers came out, and couldn't balance an RPG well until Nocturne. You literally just auto-battle everything in SMT2. It's awful.
>>
>>344143754

>You literally just auto-battle everything in SMT2. It's awful.

Yeah, I had the same experience with Persona 2: Innocent Sin. Eternal Punishment too, to a lesser extent. Well at least SMT III won't have that problem.
>>
>>344144134
Nocturne is probably one of the most balanced JRPGs there is, IMO. Strange Journey too.

I'm still mad that IV and Apocalypse make game overs mandatory, and let you save anywhere. If there's something about the SFC games that I loved, it was just how real the threat of dying and losing a lot of progress was. There were so few save points that every battle meant something, even if nine times out of ten, it meant autobattling.
