Defensive sentry-like mechanics?
Just uninstalled after dying to extra skeletron for the 8th time in the best pre-hardmode gear possible in a huge multi-layered arena covered in campfires and heart lanterns

The new artstyle on the structures, terrain, backgrounds, and plants looks really nice but I haven't warmed up to the NPCs quite yet.

I would hope the enemies are better this time around. Terraria enemies can only be challenging before you have wings or if they do more than half your life in a single hit.
Planet Centauri has pretty good enemies. Do a respectable amount of damage and have multiple attacks you need to know how to dodge.

I have all of those things, + hellfire bow and a huge stack of jester arrows, and all the buff potions, haven't gotten him below 80%, character is too sluggish and too easily knocked back to gain any momentum

The lunar event bosses were surpsingly challenging, each of them employing several different effective attacks and strategies which could be countered by certain builds. It would be a nice incentive to explore other builds than you would usually be accustomed to if they made the majority of enemies like that.

It's not Terraria 2.
I don't think it's meant to bring anything completely "new" to the table. The developers have said that it's a spinoff that is pretty much "the Terraria that could have been" + all the old content (some reworked or rebalanced).
It's just more Terraria for the people who loved Terraria.
