I find that hard to believe it was ALWAYS intended to be canon since the game itself really seems to favor a male exile since he has a more plot relevant party member (so much so that she is also "canon" despite being impossible to recruit with a female exile) and your relationship with Atris is more complex as a male Exile.

The Exile was canonically female because Revan was canonically male.
