Have you ever beaten a game without knowing or using a major/important game mechanic?

I beat MGS3 without knowing how to CQC until my 3rd or 4th playthrough
>>
>>344106575
I beat the grand majority of Dark Souls, including Gwynn, without parrying.

FFX without using guard. I just thought it was a really hard game.

>>344106678
Parrying wasn't too major in PVE.
>>
I've beaten mario 64 without jumping
>>
I beat Metal Gear Rising without knowing how to deflect/parry. After around the time I beat Wolf I just forgot it was even a mechanic.
>>
>>344106575
I beat hard mode with the best ending in Starfox 64 without knowing that you can lock on to targets.
>>
>>344106957
To be fair, they do a horrible job of explaining what it is and how to use it properly
>>
I beat god hand without knowing about the non-assigned moves like the axe kick and leg sweep.
>>
Uh when I first played DS i didnt know you could lock on until after the Gargoyles.
>>
>>344107108
Why does everyone say this? You have to perform one to progress in the tutorial.

>>
>>344106957
Truth is, up until the wolf fight you are absolutely never incentivised to use it. They kinda go over it shortly in the tutorial but why would you give a fuck when just hacking your way through everything is way more effective.

And then once that one bossfight forces you to get proficient at it, you can beat the game by not doing anything other than waiting for attacks to come in and parry them. MGR's difficulty curve is a joke.

On that note I also never knew there was that dodge / sidestep kinda move until after I finished the game. Cause the game doesn't really tell you about that either. All of the optional moves you can buy suck ass, and iirc it was very poorly explained what it did so I never bothered.
>>
In das3 I genuinely couldnt figure yhorms gimmick so I just brute forced his boss fight by shooting him in the face so he would fall down and I could critical hit him with my zweihander for like 20 minutes
turns out that was more fun than what I was sopposed to do

I beat KH2 without knowing I could switch weapons for my normal form. I thought I could give the other keyblades to only the drive forms for whatever reason. I think I found out about it when I was having troubles beating Sephiroth

my r3 was actually broken and i didnt know until i looked at some videos after beating it

In a lot of instances, not locking on is vastly superior to locking on in Bloodborne
>>
>>344106575
More or less, i didn't experiment with gems in Xenoblade Chronicles, only equipped the ones that give you more HP and Atk ignoring everything else, so a lot of fights were longer and harder, very satisfying to defeat enemies this way though. Didn't got the mini "gem crafter" neither.
>>
didn't beat the game without it but I got across the noob bridge in super metroid before I knew you could run
>>
>>344106957

>>344106575
First Dark Souls without lock-on. R3 button was dead and I figured it was done via some cryptic horse shit and that tutorial messages on the ground was missing something. Found out it was my controller when I got it on the PC a year later.
>>
>>344108193

I needed to watch that guy beating the Boss with CQC only to learn that was possible. Which later made me hate how easy is to pull off in V.

I beat doom 4 on nightmare without knowing you could upgrade armor/weapons which was my first playthrough. I turned off all the ui crap and figured I'd never use the map, which is apparently where you access such things. When I got runes I figured they were just passives that didn't change much.

The only way I figured out how this was a thing was by showing my friend that you could rocket jump with the gauss cannon and he noted I didn't have any runes equipped.

Fucking how? Not the beating the game part, but how do you not understand the basics of CQC? Not only do they extensively explain it to you in-game, but it's thoroughly explained in both the manual and the menus in-game. First fucking thing I did when the game booted up was go through the list of all the new shit you could do that they showed in the trailers. Actually, I can guarentee that any real Metal Gear fan did the exact same shit and you're probably some young little faggot who only played the HD collection. Same kind of cancerous faggots who praise MGSV. God, fuck this board, I was way too old for this place 5 years ago.

I remember when I was a kid I went to a friends house and he was playing Croc.

Him and his mother had gotten to the final boss and they told me how they just couldn't beat it and didn't know what to do.

I gave it a couple of tries and nothing really worked. Then I asked them something like "have you tried attacking him?" and they were like "What?"

Turns out they had apparently gotten to the final boss of the game without knowing that there was attack button.

Is it even possible to get to the final boss without attacking? Because I vividly remember this happening.
>>
>>344120628
Second anon here, can confirm. I didn't get Epona my first time around either.

That wasn't through lack of trying though. I was 10, and had trouble deciphering the clues in-game and the strategy guide I had been given was written in a very non-spoilery manner.

>Is it even possible to get to the final boss without attacking? Because I vividly remember this happening.
I've never played this game, but I do know that there are a lot of games that do pacifist runs where they don't kill or harm anything they do not physically have to in order to complete the game. Maybe Croc just supports that playstyle up to the boss?

In MGR, I managed to beat most of the game without doing the zandatsu once. As in, I kept having my health whittled down slowly but surely, and had to be careful with how I played. Literally the only time I did it was against Armstrong, as the QTE prompted me to.

I mean it's not that big of a deal, but still.

I beat Zelda Twilight Princess without knowing what a QTE was. In the last fight against Ganondorf you had to rapidly press the A button to leave him vulnerable to attacks so he can't simply block with his sword. Because I didn't understand what the game was asking me I failed the QTE every time.

In the end I defeated Ganondorf after fighting with him for 2 hours. I discovered that there was a tiny window of some frames after he jumped and did a sword attack that he couldn't block and that's how I ended damaging him enough for me to be able to kill him.

The Split Jump? That was an useless gimmick that was barely ever needed at any point throughout the game. They do teach you this in the first tutorial level, so you can't say you didn't know about it.

On my first playthrough, 11 year old me was just killing his way through the game by killing people. Somehow made it to the CIA level and I couldn't do that anymore, but I wasn't ready yet to git gud.

So I kept trying and failing until I found out something impressive: You can headshot guards with sticky cameras, and that will knock them out non-lethally. Then you pick up the sticky cam and reuse it.

Neat trick. In later games this still works, but it kills the guard instead.

Oh, I knew I was forgetting something. Just months ago, when I was playing Ar Tonelico 2 for the first time. I did not know what the purpose of the using the different directional keys to change attack patterns was for. I was always using whatever did the fastest/most consistent damage for like more than half of the game. Obviously, because of this, I was completely unable to charge any song magic beyond tier2.

It was only during a very difficult boss battle that I realized that I had to to try and fit the shape shown in blue on the bottom right corner to evolve the current spell to the next tier. Fuck me.

Still one of the best RPGs ever.
>>
>>344140671
I was somewhat similar, except that I missed two heart tanks (Storm Eagle and I believe Chill Penguin?) and the Arm Upgrade from Flame Mammoth.

Missing two health upgrades did mean you had as much HP as you had weapon energy, so it felt natural.
>>
>>344140671
When I was a kid I didn't know about any of the upgrades. I only picked up a handful of life expansions, and 1, maybe 2 E-tanks.

I don't think I was ever able to beat Sigma with that loadout, though. Even with everything and as an adult, it's hard for me to do.

>you need to get every item in the game
>and then go to Armored Armordillo's stage and die in it 5 times

>Dr Light will show up in it
>he'll be dressed like Ryu from Street Fighter

Is there even a cqc system? All I remember was pressing O (and then holding it I think?) just makes you grab an enemy and then slamming him to the ground. And then I think holding a direction while slamming lets you slam the target in that direction, which can knock out a 2nd target if they're in the way.

It feels more like a throw button more than an actual cqc system, from what I remember. I beat the boss with that button and I think she has some resistance to it but I dont actually remember ever being able to do the stuff snake does with the boss in the cutscenes (like some gun kata shit into throw breaks into throw breaks into throw breaks, etc).
>>

>>344119114
Super late reply but whatever. I was a retarded kid, do I didn't learn. I played the game a lot and got good at shooting things.

I was well into my 20s when somehow the matter came up, and someone informed me that you can lock on to targets. I was baffled.
>>
>>344146004
Yep, when they're talking about "CQC" they're talking about the throw/grab button.

I was super-confused by how many people say they 'didn't understand CQC' when it's the most basic shit possible. I thought maybe there was something about melee combat I didn't understand because of how many people said this. But no, they were seriously so retarded they didn't understand they SHIT THAT THE MANUAL TELLS YOU HOW TO DO

Similar feelings to all of the people saying they didn't know how to parry in MGR. It's literally just pressing the attack button and moving toward an enemy, yet I saw dozens of posts whining about how they didn't understand it.

I think Metal Gear fans might just be retarded.

That's the in-game explanation Boris(?) gives you over codec when you're playing the main game after you're done with the intro mission.

It's a bit poor choice of words, since they could have simply said "hold directional input towards opponent and press attack" or something of that sort.

I don't believe you.

As someone who played and levelled/quested as a Tauren Protection Warrior in Vanilla, that would have been practically impossible, especially killing level-appropriate mobs in grey/white gear.

If you didn't quest then I would assume you also couldn't manage professions or go to stores so I doubt you had food/bandages either, and at the rate you gained XP in Vanilla, compounded by passive healing and no items/gear meant you'd probably still be fucking doing it.

Amusing to imagine, but there is simply no way.

Plus, at 7 your Dad would have been paying for your sub. You'd have found something out from him.

My father was the kind of cunt who didn't really tell me how to play the game and teased me when I was doing something wrong, proceeded to gank me numerous times
