How can you defend this game? When it was released, it had buggy AI, the hitboxes were terrible for some weapons, the game felt more like a movie/cinematic than a game you play because every place had scripts/events for things.

The game engine of that game is horrid. GoldSrc had retained some of its Quake goodness, which is probably why it had move favorable movement for some mods too. How are you going to defend this shit?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GoldSrc_engine_mods I've tried and played most of those mods. I had so much fun with the community / people running their servers / sven co-op custom maps / superhero or warcraft mod for CS 1.6 .. but then game Source engine and suddenly not only was nobody interested in making mods for it, it probably took a year before CSS started to see any good mods either.

Here's source list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Source_engine_mods . There's probably 3 good mods on that list, else is shit. There's no NS, FF came very late, TS came even more more late, there's still no fucking sven co-op replacement (not a co-op mod, but the experience of sven co-op and the good maps and stuff, I loved the maze map and the resident evil maps).

Basically HL2 / CSS killed all the good stuff that HL1 mods and CS 1.6 had. Are people really this sheep? All I see is ppl praising with HL2 when it actually "destroyed" something that was not broken. The new source engines have very little of Quake code in them (which is probably what made GoldSrc so good in the first place). Nobody else feels like puking?

It saddens me deeply how much damage this one game had done to my gaming.

Couple of years too late with your findings.

grow up and get a life, dork.

Look at what you typed out here... you're wasting your life.

None of this modding experience will ever come back in same form of 1) single game purchase and multiple mods 2) mods that don't actually suck

We're seeing games moving away from dedicated server and server list support, modding is already very dead.

I do not agree

I can't shitpost about an OP this boring. Someone post that terrible "Half Life 2 is a bad sequel" video instead.

Half Life 2 had heaps of good mods. Then Steampipe fucked everything up.

Of course you wouldn't know that because you're just an attention seeking memer.

>over a decade later
>this anon's ass still hurts this much

Just move on and shitpost about fallout 4, or at least skyrim, OP. I guarantee your ass will fade 60 degrees of red from its current fire hydrant status overnight.

Steampipe ruined everything? But HL1 had all these mods too, I could download them on their own websites and they would add up on my steam library as I installed them, I didn't need steam for HL1 mods if that's what you mean.

The more advanced an engine, the more work needs to go into a mod to make it passable. Stop being a fucknut.
>>
>More complex engine is harder to work with and therefore less mods

wooooooooooow

Yep, and I'm wondering if it was worth it if most of the good mods died / never were made for HL2 ?

The steampipe update that came sometime after orangebox, it changed the file structure of all source engine games which fucked over almost all mods ever unless the mod author came back to fix them. And considering most of those mods were officially finished or abandoned and the mod authors moved on to different things, most of them never got updated. Some of the more popular mods had fans try to fix them up but most were shoddy fixes at best.

Half life 2 modding officially died that day.

Look at some of these dates
HL2 2004 nov

What would players who wanted to play HL experience on MP play? They would play SourceForts (2005), nowhere near as good as any of the other mods. Later year the Day of Defeat Source was released, but it was not free mod anymore and you had to pay for it because Valve had bought it.

Only somewhat good co-op mod Synergy was released on 2007, same year as TF2 (which also is a paid game, not a mod anymore). Fortress Forever was also released by modders which was free, but there was no real playerbase for it / everyone was playing TF2. It also came very very very very late since it had originally been teased years before its release.

There basically was no Sven Co-op and still is none. NS2 never happened on source engine either, was released 2012. The Specialists mod was very late on the game too, Double Action Boogaloo was released on 2014.

If you can see, those are some very late dates for some decent mods to start happening. By the time there were some mods out, people were already playing other games (CoD 4).

It was dead before, sven co-op and some other good mods didn't happen. The only reason I embraced HL1 was the mods. HL2 was standalone game with nothing "good" mods free anytime soon of its release.

You know what pisses me off also? I bought collectors edition, I got a T-Shirt. Apparently Valve had some problem with some publisher, because there were "teasers" that the collectors edition owner would get DoD:S and maybe TF2 too... but guess what, I got neither of those, I only got Counter fucking Shit. Valve dropped ball big time.

Where the fuck were you 10 years ago buddy?

>Age of Chivalry
>The Hidden
>Battlegrounds 2
>Empires
>Zombie Master
>Zombie Panic
>No More Room in Hell
>Insurgency

And that's just off the top of my head, years after touching any of them. It's not Valve's fault you're a retard who can't use moddb. If you like the hl1 mods better, fine, but to say there was nothing on source is bizarre.

Also, considering we live in a world of early access where people are willing to pay for unfinished garbage, there's really not much incentive to make free mods anymore, even if source 3 ever comes out. These people want to make real games eventually, as evidenced by the fact that all those hl1 mods eventually became standalone during the source era, like natural selection, and the source mods are now standalone too, like insurgency and chivalry. Now, In 2016, you can skip the step of building a mod over five years for no return and just go straight to selling your shit work-in-progress to idiots on early access. Times change.
