I don't know man, what sold it to me was those gameplay demos from various salons by Konami, with that dude with the chill as fuck voice, and when I played the game I got to do what he did no problem.
That and trying out Ground Zeroes which was really cool and ran really well on my PC.
Not that I don't care about the story, but what interests me in MGS, as far as the story goes, are mostly some themes and concepts. The actual development of everything had gone full retard a while ago already.

Suddenly Uprising.
Government sends in Solid Snake, unaware he'd be getting false information.
Solid Snake is so good he starts beating the shit out of Outer Heaven.
Solid Snake confronts Big Boss.
Turns out that the Big Boss from the very first Metal Gear Solid game is actually Venom Snake, a medic who saved the wrong guy's life in wartime.
