Can somebody explain the appeal of this game to me? I'm at the 100 minute mark and I'm very much considering returning it.

Let me know if there's something in the controls or gameplay or strategy that I missed that would make it as fun as I'm told, or just admit it's overrated and help me justify the buyer's remorse so I can spend the $20 bucks on something better.
If you don't like it at all yet then you should probably return it. It does not have a high skill ceiling.

Played the game a few times over. It just feels unfinished to me. I liked it, even liked the strider class. But if you don't, then return it. Easy.
The game starts off really slow. Slow enough that by the time it picks up you won't be able to return it.
You are able to train pawns to do different things, like get them to consistently launch you in the air with their shields, so that's cool
I'm going to tell you a secret. Imagination is a huge part of the appeal, at least for me. I create stories in my head of my arisen & pawns adventuring. The plot was dull but it set up hype moments like the Griffin fight. Pawns can be retarded but you either learn to live with them and adapt or get well trained ones. Climbing and Magic was admittedly shit., I agree. I tried to tell people that the webms posted are all flash. It showed alot of potential.

The main attraction for dragon's dogma is using skills to kill multiple enemies. It's certainly not hard like Ys or anything.

It's simple and you won't get by in DLC areas button mashing unless you're overleveled/equipped or cheesing everything. It's not Ys, DMC or Dark Souls.
Dragon's Dogma is a notoriously unfinished game but I still find it very fun to play from time to time.

The beginning is nearly my favorite part outside of the ox cart escort quest. Fighting those bandit groups near the Witchwood with a level 2 character is a whole lot of fun.

It stays that way until the "ending", it's intentional.
Remember to upgrade you and your pawn's skills at the pawn encampment if you haven't already. It gives you both access to a lot of new moves, including movement options.
If you're really not liking it though, return it. Game's not for everyone.

Which in all honesty is easier to do than it should be.
You can go into the DLC at the start of the game grab some end game equipment right off the bat, kill a bunch of shit way out of your league get even more broken OP shit and basically ruin all progression in the game for yourself in less than an hour.
Let's not even mention the fact the PC version includes all that DLC armor which is itself is better than anything you can find before the post-game.
For those reasons I really hate the dark arisen DLC, because is seriously hurts the main game especially for newcomers who don't know what's going on. Just looking at the PC version's pawns and seeing nearly all of them wearing that DLC armor is fucking depressing.

No it's not, not even close.
Highest DPS is ranger with blast arrows.
You down a liquid vim and spam tenfold flurry with an inventory full of blast arrows after you stack up four Conqueror periapt.
Second best is Assassin/Strider with Fivefold Flurry doing the same thing.
Next best is Mystic Knight rolling two Great Cannons with the enemy standing in a ruinous sigil after dropping four demon and conqueror's periapts while spamming full moon slash while liquid vim'd up.
Magic Archer is actually one of the worst classes, down there with warrior and mage.

DDO plays like normal DD when you're out and about.
4 player parties of pawns/players.
Only the towns and the big group missions have more than that.
Probably the best stuff is how they've altered and tuned up a lot of the classes.
Though one or two are still duds.

It's only similar to Ys in that your level can make the difference between an easy battle and an excruciatingly long one. Fighting the second cyclops was a nightmare with just Rook and my own pawn.
It may be challenging at first but once you get the hang of it the mid-game gets a lot easier.
