Unless you've never played a jrpg in your life I don't understand how you could find the game hard. The only fight I found at all difficult was the gang of dudes that ambush you for all your gold, and they are optional (and I still beat them on my second try easily). Serious tip: be careful near cliffs.
Play LISA the First if you want some context on why you should hate certain characters, and the origin for why a lot of audio samples are reused in The Painful.
Buy the OST when it goes on a deep sale, because it's pretty good absurd background noise.
If you bought The Joyful, make sure you play it after you do The Painful. Also, don't expect it to be as funny or mechanically sound as The Painful.
Most characters are better than they look at first glance. Experimentation with party synchronicity keeps the game fresh.

don't hesitate to pick up a walkthrough if you get stuck, sometimes it can be a bit unclear but it's worth powering through the little bits where the pacing seems off. The payoff towards the end of the game is great.

Oh I don't doubt that that fucked her up. It really felt like that prolouge scene was an after thought because her actions in the Painful are much more consistent than in the Joyful. I think the main reason she resisted Brad was because she was being fed lies about him from Sticky and Rick. Rando and Buzzo both recognized he was a good person.
