I used to like 3 best but before 4 came out I decided to complete NV with TTW all the DLC in one go, it has by far the best story and roleplaying of all the games. I like the setting and map of 3 better but the Obsidian writing is just top notch, the way you can influence the world and make alliances or enemies is great.
4 is better than the other two in almost every sense besides the fucking RPG elements, of which there might as well not be any. The story is bad and full of plotholes, the writing is bad, the roleplaying is terrible, dialogue is awful, you can't influence the factions in any meaningful way, speech checks are a joke, there are no skill checks. Nothing you do is meaningful or changes the world in any tangible way.
Turns out being immersed and having meaningful interactions with the characters and world trumps nice graphics and better combat.

Fallout 4 managed to dumb down fallout's RPG elements even more than fucking Fallout 3. For all of Fallout 3's shittiness, it didn't have a fucking dialogue wheel and it kept somewhat expanded dialogue choices and it still had perks and skills. The stories in both are shit and the gameplay in both is shit as well, maybe a bit better in F4. The RPG elements are diluted in both games but a lot more in F4, therefore it's a much shittier game.

I would play the game just for settlements, I love it, but they're completely non-functional and they don't actually do anything.
Ring your settlement with 30 foot high concrete walls topped with rocket launchers and they will still generate missions saying feral ghouls are giving them problems, or a raider somehow got inside kidnapped someone.
It's also buggy as fuck and the NPCs often don't interact with the shit you placed for them.

The illusion of choice but Fallout 4 wasn't very illusive. It's one thing to have the protag say the same thing, but it's another to have the NPC you're talking to say the same things with every choice too.
Most RPG's add a layer of dialogue exclusive to the text you chose then move onto the generic same dialogue. It isn't perfect, nor is it massive, but it's a lot better than "Tough shit, another settlement needs your help, now give me your pipboy whilst I put it on the map".

I can't believe they got away with raising the price on the DLC, and then announced that this next one was the last one.
My guess as to what happened is interplay made an easter egg, which was a crashed alien spaceship. Bethesda also made an easter egg which was also a crashed alien spaceship. Then when they started making dlc for f3 they thought making an alien dlc could be cool, but they inadvertently made ayylmaos canon.
