VD gameplay feels a little like a fighting game. While in SK most characters share basic inputs to do some combos, VD is more timing sensitive and as your character levels up you will end with widely different movesets. The game also has a bigger focus on mobility while also sacrificing the aerial combat SK is so famous for.
In VD you only have a basic air combo but the idea is to mix it up with a mechanic called Phantom Drive, by pressing x twice and then holding up in the second input, your character will propel herself on the direction you're facing (or towards any enemy targeted with the lock on). If you do this on an airborne/knocked enemy you will drag them in the air with you, helpless. From there you can input different commands to attack and with each successful command you will get an attack boost. This Phantom Dash is also used as regular dash to move through the stage.

Yep, the mechanic is similar. The extra inputs are actually pretty simple: basic air combo, launcher attack, charged attack and dive attack) the hard part is to get the timing right. Aside of the Dive attack, you can repeat each attack up to three times to get the attack bonus. Play your cards right and you will be able to run through the stage with a 400% multiplier on your character.
Another interesting thing to keep in mind is the Liberator/Ecsta mechanic. When you pick your characters you will have to pick the one you will play as (Liberator) and the one you will be using as weapon (Ecsta). Each "mode" is levelled up separately with the Liberator one only increasing stats and the Ecsta one being the one that actually unlocks moves.
