Metzen seriously believes that his writing in the 90s was the result of a dark time in his life and now he's commissioning Warcraft books for actual children and just wants to write superhero stories.

SC2 and D3 were in development for so long they just feel like the teams had to rush to throw stuff together in the last 2 years to actually release the damn games. I wonder how the SC2 we saw at Blizzcon 2007 would have turned out, the atmosphere felt more bleak and more like SC1 compared to the final release.

Hydralisks sound so forgettable in SC2.
SC1 ones were creepy as fuck, and iconic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hi6rJB_--g

Whereas SC2 ones just sound like some big animal, nothing more.

Zerg sounds in SC2 are in general, really forgettable and lame.

That pretty much sums the way the aesthetics of the protoss changed from SC1 to SC2.
The SC2 protoss, technology, clothing and building wise at least, look more at home in WoW than in Starcraft.

I live in the balkans and i believe sc was one of the first original games i ever got, i remember playing the fuck out of it and often rewatching this cinematic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7pifjPrBqI

I also loved the soundtrack and the dark and gritty atmosphere of the game. Nowdays blizz just seems to make cartoony bullshit for children. I guess i am no longer the demographic after seeing what they did with the necromancer in their shitty moba game, i basically felt raped at this point.

I liked the ending making use of all three races in a series of mega-missions, the steady push up the map with protoss was quite enjoyable and setting up forward bases actually felt strategic instead of just cosmetic.

Also Alarak was an immensly enjoyable character for his sheer powerhouse presence and brutal, unwavering adhesion to his own might-makes-right morality system. I can applaud Blizzard for not having him cave in and agree that friendship is best by the end.

That said...
>LotV rehashes former mission mechanics and designs like crazy with the only really fun and unique one being the level where you move your base around in space on a mobile platform (even though this being an AIR UNITS mission made it kind of pointless)
>While the protoss mission is good in the finale the Terran one is an utter rehash of the final mission of WoL and the zerg mission, while climatic, suffers from the same problems as the zerg campaign, namely that all you do is a-click swarms and micro-manage Kerrigan

Nigger, where did I say SC2 story was good?
I merely said that LotV had a better story than the other parts of SC2's story.

WoL and HotS are irredeemable shite, whereas LotV is sorta okish in comparison. It doesn't retcon and rape the lore of the protoss like HotS did with the Zerg, it has decent characters, and it also revisits many of the places of SC1 and Brood War during the campaign.
Artanis is also pretty good protagonist, in comparison to that "muh Kerrigan" Hollywood one liner spouting asshat Raynor is in WoL, or the "Still totally irredeemably evil bitch who dindu nuffin" Kerrigan which we had to endure in HotS.

Really, the best way to gauge the shittiness of SC2's story is by checking how heavily Kerrigan is involved in any given part of it.
LotV has the least of Kerrigan, (outside of that retarded epilogue at least), and coincidentally, is easily better and more bearable than the other parts of SC2's story.
Also, this smug edgy bastard was easily the best character in whole of SC2.

Same.

Defense maps were good, too. Poker Defense was the GOAT at this.

Is the SC2 custom map scene still completely dead? Haven't played in years.
>>
>>344044875
>Least of Kerrigan
Except you play as her in several missions. And she joins you. Unlike in WoL. In WoL they mostly mention her, but she kinda does her own thing until you trap her. In LotV you defend her bases, use her as a hero, play as her, defend her, she directly addresses your characters in dialogue, she's a centrepiece of the story and the biggest plot device, etc.
By your own standards LotV is worse than WoL.

If I have to listen to the dribble from the same writers of LotV, I will take as least as possible. Make 5 extra missions with minimal dialogue instead.

Also Artanis is stupid as fuck and writers missed all their marks when they tried to bring up themes. Did you notice the game had a strong theme of classes in society?

What was Element rpg?

You were like 4 people and you picked one of four types of wizards?

Dark Templar - Illusionist
High Templar - Sorcerer
Kerrigan - ?
? - ?
Something like that?

It used custom spells in the corner, moving a civilian onto beacons.
I think the high templar had a mass psionic storm that covered the screen and the dark templar hade an invincibility spell.

back in the day I was the only one left alive and died as the high templar.
Then post-wc3:tft I returned to it and beat it with Dark Templar.

Starcraft 1 music is great, zerg, terran and protoss songs.

In sc2 I do like this track though:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dssNa11htIM&ab_channel=v0
starting at 1:24

Makes me think of the only fun custom game experience I had in sc2.

Star Carnage, basically AoS+Asteroids.
AoS closer to the BattleTanks/BattleShips variety, but no auto attack.

controlled the ship with WASD, on death you lost everything except your cash, you bought new ships, guns and such.

You could capture a flag in the enemy base, bring it back to your base to damage the enemy base.

Just flying around with WASD felt so good. Especially when I managed to outmaneuver an enemy battlecruiser and got shoot down his tail.

Diplomacy maps were nice.
Diplomacy Africa and Diplomacy Europe.

Buildings in unit covered the map, belonging to a semi active neutral faction.
In the corner you walked into maybe a mineral named "Mali" with a civilian, now you got all the units belonging to the nation and you hade the unique Mali unit.
I think Malis tanks were replaced with strong reavers by trigger, and you could get new unique units if you conquered the correct control points.

War for the Ring map was great in starcraft.
It wasn't bad in wc3, but I don't think it had the audience to really take off in the same way.

The thing was cool. Starship trooper.

Various rpg maps. Open rpg maps were a lot of fun. Just starting with one unit, and eventually building your own base.

> all those various RPG's with more detail and content than your average AAA title

Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, etc all used special hex-edited StarEdit program to over-write specific map tiles so you could get a "low ground" and a "high ground" tile immediately next to one another without the transitional tiles between that normal StarEdit would force.
This community-hacked StarEdit version also had various mission triggers that the original didn't (but existed in the single player campaign) as well as the ability to corrupt the map in a specific way so that it could only be read by the game and not the editor -- effectively "protecting" the map from edits.

Which was certainly useful, given how often you'd play some tactical-based game like Bunker Wars, and the 'player 1' position would have cheated in 10k minerals for themselves.

This was the months after launch and it worked great on that map.

Top down wasd controlled.
A+D for rotating.

It was like playing Asteroids but as an AoS.

I haven't played since then because the shitty lobby system made the game impossible to play after a while because our game with 5 people in it was listed after dussins of pages of empty games since it hadn't been played during the last hour.

The hero high templar on that map only appeared with aldaris photo as a trigger.

In the editor there's no Aldaris among the protoss hero units.
>>
>>344046125
Element RPG was the the one where you could choose to be avatars of water, fire, wind, spirit, or dark usually and they were all different units that progressed and "evolved" differently based on the XP you get. At final stages you need to do trials where you fight 3 of your higher forms to evolve again.

Speaking of that evolves and MTG were great mass attack games.
>>
>>344045571
Except the story in LotV no way centers around Kerrigan, unlike that of WoL.

You encounter her in one map, where you use both her and artanis as heroes, and she is also present on the next mission.
The only thing she serves in LotV is to be the "purity of essence" on Ulnar. After those two missions, she fucks off, and is not seen again until the epilogue, which isn't a part of LotV campaign anymore.

In LotV, Kerrigan is to Artanis basically what Zeratul was to Raynor in WoL. A side character that serves a single function, and then fucks off.

And while you never control Kerrigan in WoL, she is the underlying focus of the whole campaign, and is present in it from the second fucking mission onward. She is far bigger part of WoL than she is of LotV.

>Also Artanis is stupid as fuck and writers missed all their marks when they tried to bring up themes.
How, exactly is Artanis stupid, and what supposed marks did the writers miss with their supposed themes?

No, in fact, there was an 'Aldaris' unit in NOT the scenario editor, but in an advanced map creator, SCMdraft

I remember the old days of making maps with that star edit.

I made a pretty cool Doom map based on doom 3. Had stuff like hydras being imps and goons mancubi, mutas as cacodemons and such. I remember I put in basic game and location/spawn triggers and even had a weapon swap system where when your unit approached another unit "weapon" you turn to that unit and can swap as you will because your current unit will get moved to another part of the map with a swappable beacon.

The BFG was a Archon and yhe final boss was the Guardian (a Torrasque). I made that map when I was like 14 or something. Good times. Good good good times.

That portrait always weirded me out. Tassadar looks so completely different to every other protoss, even in the cutscene Tass doesn't look like that. I assumed that he was wearing a skull mask or something.

I was kind of dissapointed that Protoss looked so samey in SC2, each individual of them in SC1 looked wildly different.
>>
>>344049732
In SCMdraft, I tried to make a horror themed rpg
It would start in a snow forest map, walking UNDER the woods, so you effectively couldnt see jackshit where you were going

Once you finally arrive in a facility, poblated with hostile DTs and infested Terrans, in which they will 1 hit you (to made it fair, I gave plenty of 'hints', like you enter in a room full of dead marines, if you keep walking in you would be greteed by an infested marine)

Then you escape from said facility, and you need to make a run with a slow vulture through the snow world, avoiding getting mauled by the wildlife of the planet

Also your character is a civilian, so no way to defend yourself or fight back
Surviving was only based on your wits and instincs

Anyone ever play whos the killer?

Pretty simple map, 10 people or so all get a civilian to move around the installation tileset map filled with hallways, doors, stairs, platforms but one player at random gets a DT as well. He's the killer and uses that DT to kill everyone within 15 or 20 mins or something. If after that time he hasn't killed everyone, people then vote with colored beacons who the killer was. All the while there's all chat and mind games and since its a DT you could actually see him coming. Man that was a fun map.

The above makes me think that the fags who complain about LotV having the protoss move on from their traditions, and caste systems etc never played SC1, seeing how that game started the whole fucking theme with the protoss.
SC1 protoss campaign was all about Tassadar, and his followers abandoning the traditions of their empire in order to save Aiur, and BW continued with that theme.

I loved RP maps when you got actually cool, competent people. The other 99% of the time it's a fucking nightmare. I'd spend twenty minutes making towns, renaming every building, raising and lowering them with keybinds to make them all mesh, set up civilian patrol routes so the city looked lived in, everything.

Then when I'm done I look at the rest of the map and it's a bunch of other players all with one unit that one-shots everything, has 999 armour and a retarded name with no capitals.

Fuck those niggers.

When Blizzard made it their life goal to make the gaming experiences of one specific person absolutely miserable and created a highly intricate plan where they would only nerf said persons class/race and would instruct their forum personal to deliberately slight, ignore and insult said individuals every post no matter how logical, insightful and thought-provoking they may be.

And don't even get me started on the way Blizzard craftily only used pop culture references the player wouldn't understand and therefore not notice when playing their old games before switching solely to pop culture references we now know about and thus find obtuse and immersion shattering.

They have much to answer for.

I think the story of Raynor and Kerrigan isn't bad because of that.

I think it's bad because Raynor does the impossible a million times and burns the fucking stars to make her human again and she just goes back to zerg in a day.

At least have him say "meh" and bang her as a zerg for gods sake...

Remember when the first gameplay teasers for D3 came out and Blizzard had to pull this shit?
>We assure you, our game couldn't be further from cartoony. It is very dark indeed! It's as dark as D2, you just couldn't tell because of the low resolution!

Arcade is such a goddamn trainwreck, wholeheartedly believe it killed custom games.

I don't think the SC2 terran music is that terrible, but I'll definitely agree the first game's music is much better
