This book is fucking awesome. I'm putting together a new PC that's a significant upgrade from my laptop and I've been pretty hype to play Witcher. Some anon recommended I read the books beforehand so I started this yesterday. It's shockingly well written and I can totally see how this lore got adapted into an rpg. So as much as I risk spoilers, Witcher thread.

I bought the trilogy during the steam sale. My only fear is that I'll get too fatigued by the time I reach the third game.
Play 1 and 2, read the books, then play 3, best order.
Recently beat hos, what a fucking wild ride, best expansion ever.
>>344032512
You should probably stagger your playthroughs, to be honest, yeah.
Maybe play 1, then finish a book and/or play some multiplayer/story light game, play 2, repeat.

Does the first story with the spriga princess ever show up in the games?

There's an entire quest that's pretty much a retelling of that one short story.
Actually, the entire first game is a retelling off half the short stories of the first two books.

I wish they did more with this guy.
They were sizing him up to be Gerald's Vergil and then he disappeared for the rest of the story.

on some level I actually prefer TW1's combat because it's as simplistic and shitty as it looks instead of 2 and 3 which is CDPR punching way above their weight.
2 and 3 feel like they're trying to emulate hack n slash gameplay but CDPR have no idea how to do that
I'm not saying Geralt needs to be doing air juggles or anything but something on the level of Demon's Souls at the least would have been nice.
Or they should have stuck to the weird not really turn based/MMO style combat like Xenoblade
>>344038675
The books had some chapters that were heavily political, but they were more or less change of pace and flavour, the Witcher never took politics center stage, although I liked Witcher 2, it was not a Witcher game, don't be mistaken about that.
>>344038730
True, but I got to admit there were certain chapters in the later books that were really gold.

>>344033067
Honestly, what's everyone problem with it? Not trying to be rude, I'm genuinely curious. It may not have been great, but imo there was nothing wrong with it, definitely not enough to drop the game because of it.

So this is the power of education in United States of American Empire... Wooooow
Can you guys who dislike the combat in TW3 explain why you don't like it and also explain how you played?
I played on Blood and Broken Bones and pic related was my build. For fights I typically had quen up and would blade flurry or whatever it's called fairly often, interspersed with sign usage when necessary (aard, yrden, and igni mostly). I died to Detlaff probably 5 times due to the bat column mostly. Although I would say the combat wasn't bad, there were times even at B&BB difficulty that I found the amount of damage enemies do to be fairly unforgiving. I ran around in wolf armor for B&W and shit was killing me in a few hits most of the time, I can only imagine how Death March is.
My suspicion is that people play the game on easy and say the combat is boring, since the higher difficulties present a clear challenge to me. Also fuck arachnomorphs.
Man, to be honest i actually enjoyed the Witcher 2 and 3 combat, especially when playing an alchemy build.
Seriously, i see people complaining about the combat in 3 but i never see anyone offering ideas to make it better. What would you have done or change to make combat better in 3?
>>344041254

>>344041329
>My suspicion is that people play the game on easy and say the combat is boring,
more like they don't play the game at all anon. You've got to just ignore combat memers. You don't play the three witcher games and cry about the combat. No one does. The games are more than just combat, anyone who plays them gets that.
>>344041616
>oh let me meme in this thread
>oh let me tell them it was all a joke

>>344041141
The first chapter is the same.
The second one is completely different with separate quests and locations
The third one has different quests and same main location, although quest specific locations are different.
So out of the three acts one and a half of one is different depending on your choices. Which gives you how many? That's right anon, roughly 50% of the game.
Counting the prologue and the epilogue probably more like 40% of content, which is still pretty damn lot.
>>344041991

My first experience with the Witcher was getting hype over the second game, for better or worse I'm the type of person who has to start at the beginning and truth be told I didn't know of the existence of the books so I played the Witcher 1. It actually took about three solid starts to really finish, I kept stopping half way through act 1, cant remember why, it was years ago. I finally managed to beat it and it was great from act 3 onwards, the final twists that the story goes through are just jaw dropping.
I finished the second game a couple years later, it was very strange, even though I enjoyed it I had the same issue finishing it as I had with the first game, repeated failures during the first act.
As the third game was approaching the hype became real for me, by this point I of course knew about the books but had only started to seriously think about picking them up after I started to watch story trailer for the game, the more I heard about Yen, Ciri and Geralt the more I was compelled to read the books.
Welp, the books are amazing, it's a damn shame their success has been limited to eastern and central Europe. The Sword of Destiny is probably my favourite with the Golden Dragon short story being my favourite within that book, but there was so much good shit, stuff likeGeralt meeting his mother, Geralt meeting death, Little Eye dying and Dandelion having to bury her.
The books ended so wonderfully that I started to become really unsure about the games at all, even though I had already played 2 of them, I went back and played the first game, mainly just wanting to see how they deal with the start of the story, but i ended up replaying the whole damn game again, it was much better than I remember, my favourite act became act 2 which is very unusual, but I think its because it felt most like a short story from the book, specifically the one about the shapeshifter.
All I'm really trying to say is the books are fucking great, read em
>>344043864
Both of them fuck other people. Let it happen, Geralt is a handsomely ugly witcher and Yenn is a magically pretty, hunchbacked witch. They wanna get theirs.
>still no saskia and iorverth in game
I wonder. is this a hint for something.
>>344037247
You must be retarded, that's because they've all enhanced their appearances with magic.
>>344042510In the second short story in the book, common knowledge about Witchers is told to be that they are trained and poisoned and mutated to have as little emotions as possible (to prevent fear when they go monster hunting). This is used against Geralt by some salty fuck who wants to split him and Yennefer up because "Come on Geralt, do you honestly believe that what you are capable of feeling love? What you feel is amusement over the attention she is giving you"
thenin the last short story "Sword of Destiny", Geralt meets Ciri and bonds with her through some cute as fuck moments (the Dryad girl is cute as hell too, SHE gets hype over bed time stories when Geralt tries to get Ciri to sleep). Anyway, he later hears about what happened in Cintra and how the entire royal family was murdered (Ciri too, he is told). He doesn't say anything, but his behaviour says it all. Then he helps a peasant get home after saving him from monsters, and there he finds Ciri. The way the last pages are written are emotional as fuck, and again Geralt doesn't say anything. His actions speak for themselves as he runs towards Ciri and hugs herI had a tear in my eye while reading it because it was so well written to really drag out how emotional their reunion was, but if I hadn't known that Ciri survived beforehand I know I would have cried. Goddamn.
>>344044068
>Littel Eye dying
That was such a gut punch.
I think that the books managed to contain equal amounts of humor and tragedy which perfectly contradicts eachother.

kek. thanks for giving my point dap anon. There is no doubt I'm right.
You instantly know when some memeing fuck hasn't played the games. It's usually quite obvious. No one who plays and enjoys the entire witcher serious would even bother to bring up such nonsense like "bad combat"
it's not even bad either. Of course that's opinion, but you just don't see witcher fans crying and memeing about it like you do the casual anons who are here to simply shitpost.
>>344064492
Found it
>>344032652
>Recently beat hos, what a fucking wild ride, best expansion ever.
Fuck you and fuck /v/ for shilling that piece of shit "expansion". It's not a fucking expansion, it adds almost nothing to the game. The first part of it was promising, I thought you would visit the land of the sandniggers, but noooo, they send you left and right in fucking Novigrad.
Fuck you.
Hopefully BnW isn't as shitty.
>>344064886
I'm not disagreeing with you, but can you go one post without using the word memeing?
It diminished your point.
>>344064901
lol nice.
>>344065039
I couldn't care less what you think anon. I know I'm right and that's all that matters to I.
>>344041391
You can install the Full Combat Rebalance which is a mod made my CDPR (former?) employees. I did my second run of W2 with it on. I think I preferred the default gameplay, FCR was too hard at the start and too easy at the end, although it felt more fluid. Ultimately I played all the games for the story and exploration anyway, the combat doesn't bother me.
>>344063379
Are you actually autistic?
>Duck doesn't literally mean ducking down
>>344041391
Probably the single most annoying aspect to the combat is the long-ass wind up times for his sword swings. 100% of the time, you will start and attack and then get interrupted when the enemy hits you first.
They should make the first attack in a combo the short one, then the later ones can be the long spinning bullshit.
Otherwise its good combat. Its just not Dark Souls which is why everyone complains.
>>344041329
>Can you guys who dislike the combat in TW3 explain why you don't like it and also explain how you played?
It's floaty and unresponsive. Using a sword shouldn't feel like an wielding a stick.
>>344065397
Oh looky looky I caught hooky
>>344041391
>What would you have done or change to make combat better in 3?
Step One: Make a good melee combat system.
Step Two: Done.
>>344039516
I read an interview to him just a few minutes ago, he (>>344039364) is almost right
>>344065729
Have a nice day anon
>>344066236
>"Maybe it's time to set the matters straight," he (Sapkowski) went on. "'The Witcher' is a well made video game, its success is well deserved and the creators deserve all the splendour and honour due. But in no way can it be considered to be an 'alternative version', nor a 'sequel' to the witcher Geralt stories. Because this can only be told by Geralt's creator. A certain Andrzej Sapkowski."
I like how angry this makes people. I don't really understand why he won't play the games (or have someone else play them and he watches) though, if anything just to see how someone else interprets his characters.
>It's a very good game but it isn't perfect, no game is.
>WOOOOOOW HAVE YOU EVEN PLAYED THE FIRST TWO? THE OLD GAMES HAVING ABHORRENT COMBAT MAKES THE BOG-STANDARD COMBAT IN 3 GREAT MERELY BY COMPARISON. YOU'RE ALL SUCH MEMERS. MEME MEME. NOBODY LISTEN TO THOSE FUCKING MEMERS THEY DONT KNOW WHAT THEYRE TALKING ABOUT. IF YOU'RE HERE TO SAY -ANYTHING- NEGATIVE ABOUT MY FAVOURITE GAME LEAVE.RIGHT.NOW.
Quality stuff pal. Keep shitting up every single Witcher thread and giving fans a bad name.
I don't even have to quote you because you make dozens of posts like this.
>>344065014
Off yourself neckbeard
>>344032268
Well maybe not 10/10 but I completely agree they're all awesome.
>>344061959
Oh shit manThat would be awesome
>>344067156
He's right though. Stay mad fromcuck
>There'll never be more hijinks with Geralt and friends ever again
It had to happen eventually but I didn't think it'd be so soon.
>>344068826
Don't pretend to be someone else when you defend yourself.
It's embarrassing
>>344032268
Now hang on love the witcher series to death but witcher 1 has very clunky gameplay and is definitely not a ten
>>344031898
I couldn't continue after the third book. Cori introduces such a shit storyline, I want more of Geralts wacky adventures not books revolving around Ciri.
>>344070284
Yeah it's really not worth reading the saga. It has some good moments but most of it is trash.
>>344069993
Shouldn't you be spamming DaS threads?
>>344035904
I know this is hours later but get True Mutantism from the Nexus you pleb.
>>344067382
Yeah, just started BnW. Such a new, beautiful map. It's already 100x times better than HoS.
Fuck you faggot.
>>344071141
Nope. I don't spam shitposts in ANY thread. That's your job.
I have no idea how people find reading entertaining
>>344072156
That is how I feel with most modern day movies.
>>344071539
As much as I love the mod, it doesn't do much other than just make Geralt paler and have scarier eyes. He's still pretty handsome
>>344036334
>Nega-Geralt
Already happened and I am guessing CDPR didn't want to redo the main villain from the books.
>>344064657
If you consider standing in one place and chaining the burning effect on enemies with your incredibly quickly regenerating Igni fun then yes it's a blast.
>>344036334
I never really thought of that.
What purpose did this guy serve in the story?
Is Morvran in the books?
>>344074391
He got named dropped as well as his father but we never see them. Vilgefortz and Steffan Skellan along with others were going to put him on the throne and overthrow Emhyr though truth be told Vilgefortz probably would have killed them once he got the embryo from Ciri.
>>344064657
Sign build is fun but it's op especially if you get the freeze aard mutation in BaW. It literally tears people into pieces in one hit
>want to give Geralt a haircut for variety's sake
>Can't bring myself to pick anything put shaved sides with ponytail or medium length, gathered behind head
>>344072156
By not being plebs.
Anybody else hyped for Gwent standalone?
If not just for the story mode
>>344040391
I loved the books, read them all, even the ones not translated to English yet.
I hope there are more book series that will get good game adaptations since it also introduces people to good books when they wouldn't normally read.
I love games, love certain tv shows, but sometimes a good book delivers feels that other media can't. Been reading War and Peace lately. Great book all around but, in the final third where I am now, chapter after chapter has just been repeated kicks in the feels.
The kind of feels that make you want to sit on a chair by a window and ponder the nature of feels
>>344077237
Have they said what they're doing with the story? All I know is they got a lot of the cast back and it's really extensive for a card game. But I mean... it's still just a fluff thing based around gwent right?
>>344031898
>tfw all of Geralt's fate and place in the grand scheme of things was created simply because he made a joke during one of his jobs
I still love it
Why every male sorcerer in the books is so likeable? Even Vilgefortz doesn't really have this "douchbag" aura, which almost every sorceresses posess.
>>344077713
They've said that your cards are treated as 'troops'.
Obviously the troops themselves aren't canon because you could have a potentially a pretty goofy ensemble like Dudu and Imlerith.
But yeah, going around with your troops.
Dialogue choices and stuff.
Just more Witcher story pretty much.
There's a map as well, with optional areas and different routes to the main objectices. Side quests.
>>344077237
>>344077713
>>344078805
Man, I wish they hadn't have removed the Nilf faction.
I know it was OP in singleplayer but they could have just rebalanced it for standalone instead of flat out removing it.
They were the coolest deck.
>>344078636
Stregobor is a major dick.
Dorregaray was a save the animal type of guy but he wasn't a dick
Istredd was a douche but he made some pretty good points and was no more of a dick than Geralt.
Vilgefortz is literally the worst man in the witcherverse and was a major douchebag.
We spend way more time with Sorceresses than Sorcerers so those are really the only ones that are fleshed out in the books.
>>344041301
what do you expect? and when they read they're even worst, they think that george r.r. martin is a good author...
>>344067039
well he's a little too old, i don't imagine my grandpa playing videogames.

If you're going to try and act condescending not being stupid is kind of a prerequisite.
>>344072156

POST TO GET YOUR ATTENTION
If I go rescue Ciri, can I keep playing on that save, or does it force me into NG+? Is there a point of no return?

>trying to derail the subject
classic gringo, this is what happens when someone reads neil gaiman in their youth
>>344084434
Yes there is and it tells you when it is so you can do other things first
Gotta love the Witcher books for being much more redpilled than GRRCuck bullshit. Sapkowski knows that people are shit in general, regardless if they are kings or lowly commoners. Whereas GoT is all about poor innocent peasants being oppressed by evil nobles. Western cucks dont understand that corruption and evil is plentiful within every social class, not just muh capitalist oppressors. God I want to punch that commie hat wearing old bastard GRRCuck in his stupid wrinkly face!
>>344040746
This picture must be thinking about Gen-z or Post-millennials, because 90's kids and 80's kids are the millennials.

>>344084741
Sounds like Abercrombie is right up your alley.
>>344054049
wait where is geralt's stache?
The actual twist when he figures out genie wishes was hilarious as fuck.
>>344054049
Geralt, buddy. I know you aren't a looker but those bangs aren't doing you any favours.
Have they ever released a canon mock up or official concept art of what Yen looks like in her natural state?
You reckon she'd look worse, better or on par with the crones in W3?
>>344086429
She would look like bones considering she would be dead without magic at her age.
>>344086848
You're bustin' my balls here Paulie.
I mean gross hunchbacked Yen.
>>344087103
She would look like a human hunchback and nothing like the cones.
I wish thefairytale landin Blood & Wine was it's own huge expansion.
Context could be that you get trapped in thefablespherebecause some kid got stuck in there and the parents hired you.
All of those references, Easter eggs and objectives were the best.tfw you see the rainbow in the sky and wonder if they'd reward you for checking.
Then you go out of your way to follow the rainbow and there IS a pot of gold at the end.
>>344059641
how autistic do you have to be to think the games are better written than the books
thats impressive

>since the higher difficulties present a clear challenge to me
That's because you have one of the worst builds I have ever seen.
>no alchemy at all
>no counterattack
>all the traits for both heavy and light attack
>three neutral traits
>>344090185
They are. Sapkowskis only good books are short stories, he's not a very good writer.
>>344091383
B B B BUT YOURE AUTISTIC NOT AGREEING WITH ME
>>344033253
because Geralt is amnesiac during 1 and 2/3rds of 2. You learn everything as Geralt relearns it.
>>344091383
Not that guy, and I mostly agree with you having read all the books.
I still think he deserves credit for laying down the groundwork and creating the characters and universe.
Still a bit frustrating that he's so dismissive of the video games despite their narrative quality. However, he's an old dude so I don't hold it against him too much.
>>344091217
Alchemy isn't necessary for a good build, I use Rend, Whirlwind, the ability that maxes all signs to top level, and other sign upgrades.
>>344036334
Yeah, he was surprisingly cool.
The frenchiest character I`ve ever seen, but still pretty cool.
>almost no spooky quests in Blood and Wine
I wish there was more of the painted world and that one tower in the southern velen, that shit was incredible
Most OP thing in the entire series.
Even makes a mockery of NG+ blood and broken bones.
>>344091823
His ideas aren't bad, he has some really great ideas and characters, translating ideas into a story is a different thing. I have nothing against Sapkowski except his ego and thinking his writing should be gospel.
>>344091972
Ehh, there was plenty of spooky stuff in the base game and HoS.
I appreciate that B&W feels very different.
Dig the high society, artsy atmosphere because of how sharply it contrasts with the base game.
I fast traveled back to Velen mid B&W to see Hattori and it blew mr away because i forgot how drastically different it looked.
>>344041329
>My suspicion is that people play the game on easy and say the combat is boring, since the higher difficulties present a clear challenge to me.
lol you must really suck then if you are using all combat and if you are playing on the 2nd highest difficulty. I went through DM using only 3 combat slots and the other 9 were dedicated to alchemy, signs and general. The game is really not that hard.
>>344058149
Chronologically it's Sword of Destiny, Last Wish, Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, Tower of Swallows, then the other one.
All but the other one have been translated.
>>344092502
Its difficulty is kind of erratic, it leaps between far too much. I just play what's fun, and your build sounds as unfun as possible.
>>344038085
