But Harkonnens have Devastators and the Nuke special. Yeah Ordos is kinda shit but it was funny the first couple of times to take out enemies with their own stuff.
>>
>>344029165
If you're currently on 8, then you might as well upgrade to 10. The issue becomes more if you're still on 7, since the 10 upgrade has been known to fuck some things up. Plus 7 is a good enough OS that it doesn't really need the upgrade other than "We told you to" unless you REALLY want to play Killer Instinct.
>>
>>344029435
I'm already on 8.1 because the laptop came with it and the home computer needed to upgrade from vista after 7 stopped being sold.

Then just go right to 10. Compared to 8, it's more or less a straight improvement, and I don't think there should be any noticeable conflicts.
>>
>>344029165
W10 is okay, you will actually get some performance improvement in DX11 games although /v/ likes to pretend you don't.
7 is still good enough if you're comfortable with it.

Thanks for the reminder OP. I plan to just install it in a VM, these days you can give a VM low level graphics access (not sure if it's working with W10 yet but if not it's only a matter of time) so vidya performance is generally fine (minor hit, but my system is overpowered enough that it doesn't matter to me). Then I'll have it if I ever need it, but I can very easily and tightly control what it sees and what it broadcasts via the virtual machine and a packet filter. I can just MitM W10 in the VM so I can handle even SSL externally and transparently.

Mainly my problem has been laziness, I don't have any ACTIVE reason to want W10, I just figure I might someday and I don't want to have to pay for it when that day comes. I guess here's the kick in the ass though.

I bet it'll just be a token amount though. Why would Microsoft ever make it cost money again, or at least any significant amount of it? Clearly the "limited time" thing is just marketing to try to get people to upgrade rather then resisting infinitely, but as time goes on a lot of people will slowly be dragged up by ever more software requiring it and systems that need it (eventually W7 and W8 won't run on new Intel systems at least). If they make it cost a lot of money that might push people to just abandon ship entirely. If it's like $30 that'd make more sense.

Also, obviously talking personal use here. Enterprise licensing isn't going anywhere but that's a separate thing.

>So are Harkonnens Northern Irish or what? I guess their mentat could be from anywhere.
Harkonnens are supposed to be descended from some Finnish family, but of course 10k years in the future, stuff gets really convoluted.

Atreides goes all the way back to the Greeks and Atreus.

But what do the Harkonnens represent? I don't know - I suppose any brutal "iron-fist" tyranny that we'd see in history.

Real time feed of all network communications by the OS as the user performs various actions. What it's showing is that absolutely fucking everything is logged and transmitted back to the mothership, everything that's typed, every click of the mouse, everything there.

User doesn't actually do EVERY action in that gif, IIRC certain OS boxes (like password prompts, so long as they're official) are sandboxed and don't transmit for obvious reasons, but otherwise Microsoft is collecting tons of info. They say (and may even be honest in their intentions right now) that it's for making the product better, so for example they can see if there is a pattern of thousands or millions of users who all have trouble with one control panel or something, but the problem is that even if they're honest now, who knows how they'll be in 10 or 20 years (or 5). Once that data is grabbed it's not vanishing, so you have to trust them not just now but FOREVER. And also that they're not hacked, or do a merger or whatever. Which is why the best security whenever possible is simply not to have something in the first place.

See >>344031659. Sooner or later you WILL start to see software that requires it, more and more, and eventually hardware too. Just like Windows 2000 is utterly obsolete and even Windows XP is basically dead as far as support goes, it costs money to support old stuff and eventually no one will bother. Microsoft won't give you security updates forever either, and in the modern world if you don't get security updates you will 100% get hacked eventually if you use the net.

So if you plan to continue to use Windows you will need W10 sooner or later, might as well grab a copy while it's free even if you just stick it in a VM for future use. Running W10 in a VM on top of a hypervisor or BSD/Linux might ultimately be a decent option too.

>>344034558
Yeah, copyright lasts forever now and stats never go away. Someone may come after you for something embarrassing and just ask for a settlement and depending on your situation you might easily pay just to keep it quiet. If you downloaded some nasty JAV shit and they ask for $1000 just to quietly make it go away rather then $15000 at a noisy trial when they've got you dead to rights anyway? It's not jail time or a criminal record or anything, but that'd add up too.

>Are we talking in the US?
No, but I know there are lots of non-'murcans browsing 4chan too and anon I was replying to didn't specify. Also even lots of Americans travel, which at least temporarily put them under other jurisdictions. In some places arrest warrants can just sit on the books forever, timers don't kick in until they're executed. While I don't know of any instance for porn, the fact is that people have sometimes been surprised years or decades down the line when they're pulled over for having a light out or something, police run the name by default and then arrest them for something that had happened forever ago.

Again, one concerning thing about the modern "Big Data" world is the longevity and thoroughness possible, and how that does not connect with historical common sense. If everything is collected then even if nobody can do anything with it now who knows what kind of processing power and bureaucracy we'll have 20 years down the line? A lot of bad things people do and get away with now simply through obscurity may suddenly become relevant again.

>Also, does any of this apply to Windows 8? I had heard that there are some security concerns with that too. If so, what can I do?
This isn't about security it's about privacy, they're soft linked but orthogonal concepts. Windows 8 doesn't collect the same level of ubiquitous statistics and usage at all, it has some concerns depending on what you're doing but nothing like the same. Basically don't worry about it much unless you're doing something serious, in which case you need to read about how to harden your browsing in general using services like Tor, learn about opsec, etc which is way too complex for a 4chan post.

If you really think you will never want to upgrade anything, ever, or get any new software (including vidya) then that puts you in a small minority.

>>eventually hardware too
>I use a laptop and have no intention to "upgrade" until it dies. When I do it will be another laptop
Yeah, which will probably require Windows 10. So there you go. Why would you think a laptop would let you get away with older stuff, if anything laptops tend to be pushed faster not slower.

>>security updates
>Didn't update XP once when I used it, same for 7. Never been hacked because I'm not literally retarded.
Retarded has nothing to do with it, we're not talking trojans, we're talking drive-by or self-propagating exploits, as in you literally just need to visit a page (and remember in this age most pages use 3rd party ad networks, so even if you just browse "safe, good" sites if anything THEY use is hacked you're still going to see malware), or be connected to the net period. Windows XP and older are completely unsafe to use at this point because there are known active self-propagating zero interaction exploits that Microsoft will never patch. You can try to completely block them off from the net entirely and limit exposure, but most people will not accept that for normla use.

>So am I to conclude that I will never ever need Win 10?
No, you're not on multiple levels. Unless you drop Windows entirely for your main OS, W10 is in your future.

>Not him but does this mean statute of limitations doesn't exist in many European countries or something?
There's no point generalizing, you really need to look up the specifics for wherever you live (or plan to ever visit), the problem is it gets really complicated in many areas. Like there will be a headline statute of limitations sure, and if you just naively look quick you'll see that and figure "well, I know I haven't been naughty in any real legal problem way in the last 10 years so I must be fine". But in some places the statute is suspended once and actual warrant for arrest is issued, it doesn't go away simply because they couldn't execute it. The timer gets suspended basically, and any new ones only kick in for certain conditions. So some zombie warrant just sits there on the records somewhere long after time would normally run out. Sometimes odd things can trigger this, like the guy who forgot to return a video, which was some $100 penalty or something, but then interest accumulated, auto penalties kicked in, and it eventually it reached the level of a felony, which don't run out.

I'm not saying this is common, which is why it gets less attention right now. But that's due to administrative and data limits as much as anything. In a future world where everything can be far more perfectly enforced it'll be much easier to get tripped up by honest surprise.
