A sport, to me, requires multiple people involved in cooperative athletics engaged in conflict to accomplish a goal.
Racing is just that - a race. It's a test of physical skill, of course, but not a sport, since there are no real tactics you can employ (in fair games, at least) to deal with your opponent, and vice versa. You can only go faster.

But let's ignore that, and let's figure out what makes a sport a sport. I think we could both agree on that a sport is:
- Physically demanding
- Competitive
- About working toward a goal
- Involves tactics to win (as per your argument about racing's lack of tactic)
So we agreed that it's physically demanding. There's no doubt in my mind that you know that racing is also competitive in nature. The goal to racing is to make it to the finish line first.
Now it's hard to discuss the tactics universally because there are different kinds, but nonetheless I'll list some.
Exclusively to drift racing, a car may drift constantly to block the next car from advancing.
In racing situations with fast cars and long straight paths, one may slipstream to make an advance on the next car. In the same situation, the next car may decide to block the other by swerving in the same direction as the other.
And that's what I can think of right now.
