notice how in case of TES games, both Oblivion and Skyrim DLC show many more of the weird aspects of the lore then the main titles, and how its much more in your face about it? Shivering Isles is about mantling an insane god, Dawnguard mentions the Ideal Masters and Soul Cairn AND goes into more detail about the Falmer, and Dragonborn revolves around a Daedric Prince and a Dragonborn trying to mantle an old god

Because Bethesda's lead writer cannot write an extensive plot that remains cohesive and coherent to save his fucking career.
Short stories, they seem to nail down pretty well. Far Harbor, along with Skyrim, FO3, and Oblivion's DLCs were pretty good. But the main story always seems to suffer horribly.
Skyrim had an story that fumbled around a lot.
Fallout 3's story was absolute trash.
Fallout 4's story was just a big pile of fuck.
But their DLC content is always way better for some reason.

They're more focused. Sprawling, open-world, RPGs are fun, very fun, and account for hundreds of hours of stuff to do, BUT it makes the main quest feel less focused and, consequently, important.
