Reviewers aren't paid off by Square anymore so they've got a certain degree of prejudice against most of their titles for that reason alone. It doesn't affect much. Basicly each char gets a 'bonus' ending blurb IF you reach a certain level of affection with them. you cant see the affection levels and its influenced by PA's and such.
I enjoyed the game but it was not worth the money paid for it. I did around 80% of bonus quests, got all chars to lvl 99 and kitted out in high level crafted gear yet finished the game in 32 hours.
Take away the time spent farming the bonus missions and crafting mats and you've got like 12 hours of story content if that.

I actually just finished this game. I enjoyed it but the criticism regarding its length and variety were fully justified. Game ends at what should be the halfway point, if that. Too few zones and what zones existed weren't terribly interesting save Coast of Minoz. Enemies also started getting reused pretty early on.
I also felt the game didn't gain much from having every party member participate in combat. Also made it very hard to see when you should guard or dodge due to all the effects.And was that place supposed to be Styx?

If there's one thing SO has always done right, it's having a shitload of superbosses.
This game is so mediocre and barebones it's painful. There's only a handful of areas in the entire game and you do nothing but constantly backtrack through them a billion times not only for the story but the shitty MMO tier sidequests as well. PA system is fucking terrible. They made it easier to initiate but god damn having to go in and out of a building to see if there's more is stupid as hell and tedious. On a side note there's way too many Relia centered PAs. My fucking god. Give the other characters some more. Battle mechanics are retarded and can be completely ignored in favor of spamming strong skills.

After beating the game, it's left a good impression because the post game dungeon was pretty good. Could have been a lot better, but it was good fun for hours with no walking sim breaks in between the fights and crafting.
