Ask any dumb questions here.
gtx 1070 or rx 480 discussions welcomed

is that distilled water or something?
>>
>>344018252
if the computer doesn't work it's probably water

if it does work it's non conductive mineral oil
>>
>>344018252

even if you use pure water, it'll collect metal bits and other shit and become conductive again
>>
>>344018443
Can't imagine the psu works well in a liquid?
>>
>>344018252
The computer probably isn't turned on. After the photo they just let it dry before switching it back on.

>>
Ok let me ask this:
Do you think it's ok to store a PC tower under a desk?
I ask because my tower takes up most of this desk's room, and I can't get a bigger desk in my room.
I worry about airflow and it becoming a dust magnet.
>>
>>344018731
I've never had my tower not be under a desk.

mineral oil is nonconductive so it's basically like the parts are just in air

it's just science

>>344018731
it really doesn't matter you're going to have to clean dust out of it one way or another
>>
I have it under my desk, it gets dusty as shit but i havent had problems with airflow
>>
>>344018731
What I did was drill 4 1-inch holes in the wall to the outside and filled them with caulk. Then once the caulk set, i drilled 1/4-inch holes in the caulk to create air flow. Works like a charm, my temperatures stay low and there's no dust because it gets stuck to the caulk, which I blast with hi-pressured water through the holes once every 3 months to clean.
>>
>>344018539
no. A computer can run in mineral oil for years

>>344018443
There's fish in the tank though.

>>344018619
>>344018696
It's already submerged in gas. Liquid is no different, just denser. As long as it doesn't conduct at the used voltages there's no problem
>>
>>344016456
>gtx 1070 or rx 480 discussions
If you're implying those are comparable you're wrong, the 1070 will definitely outperform the 480.

the 1060 will most likely be moderately better than the 480 so they are more comparable.

I know the expensive "gaming" laptops can run games like Crysis 3 and Metro at 1080 and 50-60fps at medium-high settings with filters off, but I really hate that they have 1920x1080 screens, 14-19 inch screens don't need to be 1080, I'd rather have 768p or something like 1200x800 just to be able to get extra FPS in games.

I checked my local shops and, funny enough, RX 480, R9 390 and GTX 970 cost all exactly the same.

Which one would be better purchase and why? R9 390 seems to have best performance out of those three.

It's not about what games you can play, you can play any game with a $350 PC with lower settings, it's about what you can max and what you can play at 1440p / 4K with playable frame rates.

If you're not interested in maxing out all games and future games within the next 5-6 years at 1080p 60fps and even 1440p then don't bother upgrading.
>>
>>344019872

Im living in central Europe, so maybe thats the answer.

I mean, Im seriously thinking about importing PC parts from US for the first time. 240$ with taxes should be 265 EUR, not 300.

I guess I should wait for volta and maybe 4k 60 will becoming something by then. I only got 1080p monitors anyway and the only real games that have made my gx 770 shit the bed was witcher 3, doom, and shitty fallout 4
>>
>>344020190
what about tariffs and customs and import fees
usually if something is cheaper to import at first glance, local companies have already looked at that and are still edging them out, even if only slightly

>>
>>344019880
If you're not gaming or doing pro video editing than literally anything with Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 should do fine. I don't recommend getting one with an AMD cpu though, and if you ever want to do light gaming I'd say get one with an intel cpu that has HD 3000 integrated graphics at least. But yeah, for just uni stuff any $180-250 laptop should do fine.
>>
>>344020294

>what about tariffs and customs and import fees

Aside from transport costs, I already checked that in case of importing electronics from US to EU, you only pay VAT as extra. In case of individual customer, many shops already cover that part for the client (for example, Amazon, have to check if Newegg does that too), meaning that price you pay them is final one for you.

Get the 480. Over time drivers will improve performance, plus DirectX 12 shows up to 20% increases in performance. Future proof it with the 8gb. If you can wait, get an aftermarket cooler.

I just don't feel comfortable about the new batch of incoming games running at maxed 1080p.
Witcher 3 is already pushing me in the low 40ies.
>>
Should I just stick to the /g/ sticky to learn more about building PCs? I have no idea how most of this shit works and I really need a decent PC right now.
>>
>>344023961

Still dumb.
Also you fucked up if you are pushing 40s at 1080p with a 980.
I played through the game on a 970 at 1440p and was 40-60 the whole way.
I was rock solid 60 at 1080.
>>
>>344023961
I thought the 980 maxed witcher 3 except for maybe having to turn the NVIDIA hair shit down. Are you sure it's not your GPU bottle-necking?

>>344022434

>>
>>344024368

>take the most demanding game (not due to shit optimization) of the day
>try to go beyond 100%
>buh im pushing 40s..

Well suit yourself then but SLI is dogshit and you are buying an old gen card to play one game in better quality.
Not to mention how several performance saving settings are absolutely indiscernible, I can only think whatever tweaks you use are not much different.
Even on shadows on ultra is barely perceptible but a gigantic performance cut.
>>
>>344024368
>hairworks on and ini tweaks to go beyond maxed settings

Well that's your problem obviously. That's like saying you can't max Half Life 2 at 120fps with a GTX 460 but it's because you're downsampling it from a 4K resolution and have SweetFX settings running.

You can max vanilla Witcher 3 without .ini edits and that's all that anyone accounts for when they say "max".
>>
>>344024613
>>344025005
Well, I just take the ini tweaked W3 as an indicator of the performance of future demanding games.
Also, I'm autistic when it comes to grass draw distance in games.
>>
>>344025369

Very very wrong baseline, I mean I WISH that would make sense but no.
Some of TW3s competition already run worse than it does and is absolutely disgusting while doing it.

I don't judge your enthusiasm for graphics, its just not logical that you try to future proof for non-existing games by buying an old generation card right now.
Surely you can see why.

I mean if what you want is to play TW3 at 60 right fucking now and you can afford it, sure, I bought my 970 for the game even though I was satisfied with a 770 for everything else.
But its one game that we probably both already finished.

Only upgrade if you have something specific you MUST run better, either by choice or because its running too shit. Upgrading for hopes, expectations and dreams is dumb.
>>
>>344024398
Actually there are a few Vizio and Samsung TV's that only have 13-18ms input lag and 10-12ms GTG whereas most current $100-200 TN and IPS panel monitors have 10-20ms input lag and 5-8ms GTG so really they are no different than a monitor in gaming nowadays, even the Vizio P series can do true 120hz at 1080p and 60hz at 4k at only 17ms of input lag which is pretty good considering that my generic 19 inch HP monitor has 19ms input lag. From what I've read, basically anything under 30ms is unnoticeable, especially when getting 100+fps at 120hz.
>>
>>344025369
like >>344025369 said, just wait for better cards if you want to be smart with future proofing, unless you're filthy rich and can afford getting a new card every year.
>>
>>344025896
>>344026663
I guess you are kinda right, I also always preferred single card builds.
But the things is, GPU prices never drop here. Ever. So, if the 1080 is 850 euros now, it will not fall in price. Thus, if I can get that kind of performance with the 400ish of a 2nd 980 I'd be happy.
Only thing I'm concerned about is that 4gb of vram might not be enough in the future.
>>
>>344027418
That and SLI is hardly reliable for every game and it is really finicky, at least from everything that I've ever heard about it. Some games it works wonders and others it has stuttering issues or even subtracts FPS. Single card is always the way to go for reliability and future proofing.

Why do people come on /v/ just to brag about how they don't like video games? You rarely see this on other boards. If you go on /mu/ and say something like "Why buy a new sound system, all modern music is shit" you'll get laughed off the board. But it's completely acceptable and even encouraged to brag about how old your hardware is because "no new video games are good or worth it." I don't understand why some people even browse this board.
