I don't think you really played WO3 for very long. It only takes a one or two moonviewings per pair of characters, and then playing a single mission together to unlock a side mission.
Once you get a character to level 999, they're fucking insane OP. You can run across any map in 20 seconds and one shot any enemy on the hardest difficulty. If anything its too easy to get characters broken because of the gauntlet mode reward missions.

Low Health and High Damage is OK for masochists like me though.
It made the game super frustrating (most notably the fucking archers) but also really fullfilling once you complete a stage. Playing the game in Hard and using only recommended characters made the game a very memorable experience for me, even if it was for all the wrong reasons.
I must say it's been a while though, so I don't remember much about the game. But it's definitely the best one for fanservice.
Also, you can't recommend older Musou games if you don't nostalgia googles the fuck out of them. Even if they are good gameplay- or story-wise, they just hurt too much to look at.

The land below the Yangtze was literally toxic for northerners, and Shu mountain-dwellers didn't fare much better. They could have survived behind that river for ages if the emperors following Quan had been somewhat competent.

It's not enough for the novel author to prop them up, that in itself wouldn't have been too bad. But it was done at the expense at making the other factions look worse than they were.
I mean look at these:
Guan Yu killing Hua Xiong (it was Sun Jian's forces. Zu Mao Incidently didn't get killed by Hua Xiong as described in the novel, no record was made of what happened to him)
The Shu-Wu alliance against Cao Cao.
Zhou Yu did not harbor an intense jealousy towards Zhuge Liang, he was more cautious of Liu Bei and feared he would use the battle to pull out and capture territories whilst Wu and Wei were recuperating.
There was no banquet assassination attempt on Liu Bei. There was however a debate between Lu Su and Guan Yu regarding territories, which Lu Su won.
Lu Meng was legit a better tactician and commander than Guan Yu. He died in illness but novel made it so it's Guan Yu's spooky ghost killing him for some reason.
Zhao Yun killing Zhu Ran, ignoring the fact that he actually lived after Yi Ling and went on to become one of Wu's most accomplished officers.
The entire butchering of Cao Zhen just to make it seem like Zhuge Liang is an unstoppable beast that can only be matched by Sima Yi.
