Also, for easy start, Drag the soldiers from the security checkpoint down the road back to the first base and watch them get destroyed by other stalkers.

Personally not my fav of the series. It does atmosphere and story the best but gameplay is bland (blame the engine 1.0).
Just get the ZRP and a few retexs for your first run and you should be fine.

It really fucks me up that in the fucking year 2016 people on /v/ still did not play STALKER.
Whether it is good or not depends on whether you are casual as shit or not, simple as that. It is one of the best games I have ever played in many regards, but its difficulty spikes and wonky engine put off many players.

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.
Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

Also do not start with major overhaul mods at first. Play patched vanilla first, that's already proven to provide enough challenge to most rookies nowadays.

that does not make the game "unfinished". There was simply lots of content cuts and map shrunks performed before the release, because their publisher started getting very impatient after half a decade of development time.
The game still works surprisingly well, and is definitely the best introduction to the Zone's wonders you can get.
