What's the deal with all these early access "survival" games? Minecraft and DAYZ were successful, but a whole new genre has seemingly sprung up in the last few years.

More importantly why hasn't a competent AAA dev capitalised on this craze yet? If some chucklefuck managed to make a complete, non buggy version of all the shit currently clogging up Steam it'd be a license to print money.

I love the idea behind "survival" games, but I don't wanna deal with early access bullshit. Subnautica's alright though.

Pick one.

7 Days to Die is good though.
>>
>>344001750
well it's popular and got ARMA a bump in sales atleast.

good one, anon

But it is. It's better than GayZ and Rust at the very least.
>>
>>344002150
Theres literally nothing wrong with rust if you play with a group
Or is that too much to expect from 4chan autists

There's nothing wrong with throwing poop at a wall with a group.

Every GayZ game ever:

>spawn
>walk to meet friends for 5-60 minutes
>die randomly
>repeat

Makes alot of sense actually, but consider this that it is a very solid game with minimal bugs for a survival game and its pretty content rich desu

No because everyone is still playing minecraft and rust despite the bugs and shitty community

First off nobody cares about console peasants. Also the game's in early access.
>>
And let's not forget we have all these shitty early access games thanks to Dean Hall.
>>
>>344003510
Devs are cancer so I'm not even going to buy it when it's finished.

Not that it'll ever be finished.
>>
>>344003691
How are they cancer?
>>
I'd just like to note here than DayZ standalone is incredibly poor compared to the Exile mod for ArmA 3, and the latter is a free mod.
>>
That's what Fortified is supposed to be, or whatever that epic games craftfest is called
>>
>>344003765
>>344003463

That's a shitty move, you can meme "muh peasants" all you like, but fucking over a proportion of your player base is the sign of a greedy Dev.
>>
>>344004007
Everyone knows it's early access, dawg. If you expected an early access game to be totally without bugs then you deserve to be disappointed. Also if you weren't a peasant you could have picked the early access up for under 10 bucks.
>>
>>344004110
Charging £30 for an early access game is a cash grab whatever way you look at it dawg.

Dropped.
>>
>>344004110

>Early access

To what? The game will never be finished to any reasonable degree.
>>
Why do people buy unfinished games? I'll never understand this phenomenon.
>>
>>344004327
They update the game pretty frequently, and it's more than playable already. Don't listen to the console pleb. Doesn't know what he's talking about.
>>
>>344004328
people are still desperate for an mmo that isn't shit
>>
>>344004364
Shame it looks like a ps2 game
>>
>>344004364

I could say a lot of early access games are 'more than playable', I've gotten a few hours of fun out of a few of them. But one thing they have in common is that they're all incredibly shallow and lacking in content.

Is this game fun after what, 5, 10 hours?
>>
>>344004423
I don't know what the console version looks like but the PC version certainly doesn't.

>>344004448
I have over 400 hours logged so yeah, I think it is.
>>
>>344004448
Only if you play with friends, but the same can be said about any game.
>>
>>344004007
>>344004110
>all of my friends buy it
>guys isn't this still in alpha
>na man it'll be fine
Sure, the game is fun because of my friends, but I feel as though I've been robbed. How did sony ok this trash for publishing? Also how shit are the devs?
>let's make a giant game
>uses unity
>>
>>344003042
This, survival bullshit is the normiest genre ever.
>>
>>344004513
It uses unity? Into the trash it goes.
>>
>>344001524
That's a really old screenshot of Rust. If you own it and haven't played in a long time, it's worth checking out the new stuff. I think Rust might actually be finished someday. Maybe.
>>
>>344004512

I can make literally sitting around doing nothing fun with my friends - does it let me do anything with those friends I can't do anywhere else? If it's just a glorified chatroom while I do menial tasks then I'll pass.
>>
>>344004513
In my opinion this game shows just how good a unity game can be. The game's better than similar survival games made in UE.
>>
>>344004007
Console peasants were created to be abused.
They bought the console in the first place, it's only right that their suffering continues.
>>
>>344003401
Supposedly he's working on some kind of Space Station 13 clone now.
>>
>>344004624
But it looks and runs like shit.
>>
>>344003401
i doubt that
>>
>>344004763
Objectively false.
>>
>>344004763
I disagree about it looking bad. I think many of the human character models look bad but the zombies look and move pretty good. A lot of the other assets look fine, too.

Also it runs totally fine on PC. The only time it gets bogged down is if you play on a server with more than 8 people, which is the current maximum recommended.
>>
>>344001524
Survival games suffer because they're always so quick to win.

You build walls and a farm next to a water source and you're set. You're good forever. Nothing harms you and the game becomes easy.
They need challenges, big problems to deal with. Fires, storms, natural disasters, raids/sieges. Shit that keeps you on your toes.
>>
>>344001524
>Dayz was successful
THERE IS NOONE ON THIS EARTH MORE DELUSIONAL THAN PEOPLE WHO CLING TO THE FANTASY THAT DAYZ WILL BE COMPLETED. ITS BEEN LITERALLY YEARS AND ITS STILL A SHITTY MESS IN ALPHA. If you bought this game i feel sorry for you because you deserve to be shot on sight

>>344005037
Because there's a fine line between being too easy and being impossible when it comes to base-building games.
Natural disasters wouldn't be a fun mechanic to deal with, you've just spent 8 hours making a nice looking base and suddenly RNG comes along and destroys half of it.
>>
Most survival games, at least in my limited experience, seem to lack slow and ponderous gear or weapon upgrades that allow someone to always be slowly advancing and getting better.

It seems in most of the games it goes from basically no armor or weapons, to decent basic weapons/bows, to firearms and fortresses. These games would do well to include more methods and means of creating and crafting items; such as armor that can be produced from plants OR animal skins, weapons made from rocks OR animal bones, etc.
>>
>>344006163
>goes from basically no armor or weapons, to decent basic weapons/bows, to firearms and fortresses
I always skip the "decent basic weapons" stage. I'll spend that phase gathering extra resources and rush research to get the later weapons.
>>
>>344006163
7 days does this but it's nothing special.
>>
>>344001524

>buying 25.000$ hardware for playing shitty early access games

trully the grand master race huh
>>
>>344003349
I wish subnautica would introduce a deeper tech tree and more creatures etc since there is absolutely nothing else. Instead they focus on garbage like "basebuilding" and changing the color of some vehicles. Like jesus fucking christ in the last year they have added like two new creatures. There cannot possibly be even a single guy working fulltime on the game.
>>
>>344006803
Ark runs fine on a 760.
>>
>>344001524
>why hasn't a competent AAA dev capitalised on this craze yet?
They're already on it with Days Gone and State of Decay 2
>>
>>344003349
Nah. Ocean planet is more interesting.

I want them to make a harsh weather system with massive storms that makes it impossible to reach the surface for several in-game days.
