I'd ask in which game, but in general, she is. In 4 she's one of the best magichange monsters, and she's a pretty good one in 5 as well. In 3 I don't really remember, but I think the factory mass-produced Descos are pretty good.
As a bonus, she's a flyer, so she's good at positioning.

Desco and Fuuka are at least get their own chapter in 3 and 5. I like how Mao in 3 acts like the mad scientist he is and his first idea is to immediately clone her to make a Desco army. But yeah, I guess there is a bit of that, in general. DD2 was especially bad since it seemed to flanderize its own main characters, but at least they got character development there as well.
Speaking of DLC, I think the main character of Battle Princess of Arcadias was in DD2, but they just skipped her in 5. I wonder if game wasn't really popular, which is a shame because while it feels a bit incomplete in the story, it's actually pretty good.

Desco is actually one of the best monster units, and like, top 3 units in the entire game.

She was in DD2, yeah, the weird thing is that NIS cut a shitton of DD2 DLC characters from D5, I think Metallia and Salvatore were the only ones who made the jump from DD2 to D5, so characters like Human Prier, Alex, Eclair and Lilliel were cut. It doesn't make any sense to me, why spend devtime creating spritesheets and movesets for characters people have wanted to see in Disgaea, only to remove them in the next installment?
I also don't understand why Marona, Ash, Human Prier and Gig were cut.

NIS usually includes characters from recent games as DLC to promote said games, but those don't appear again. 2 had Mabel from that Marl Kingdom spiritual succesor we never got localized (and Mabel also is exclusive to japan), 3 had Hero Prinny and that detective from a horror game, 4 had Pirohiko and DD2 had the angel from Guided Fate and the MC from Battle Princess. Metallia was also in DD2 I think.

I like that at least the DLC characters are well implemented in D5, you can do their chapters very early, they get their lines of dialogue which change depending the chapter you're in, and they even have combo attacks with non-dlc characters. But yeah, I guess that a lot of the big players were missing, although I think that they would have to make a set of evilities for each of them, and it might have been TOO MANY evilities and DLC characters, eventually. Even now my character list does feel a bit bloated.
D5 is by far my favorite Disgaea in terms of gameplay, however, I think they finally hit the point where they streamlined the parts that were to be streamlined to the right point. If I had to make any complaint, it would probably be that while fun, the new chara world feels like a chore when you have to max out several characters. Also I get way more items than I use there, which bloat my inventory.

Ah, I'll have to concede on this point, in D2's PSP port, they added a bunch of characters+DLC, I put in a bunch of hours into that game and got a few DLC characters, by the time I hit the LoC, I had around 42 unique characters, not even including the generic classes. I suppose it is possible to have TOO many units in a game, but I still feel that main characters of games, like Marona and Gig, should still appear.
Anyway D5 is outstanding, and I see your point about the Chara world, but at least it's a fun minigame now, and is miles ahead of the tedium known as D4 and D3's chara world, which was basically just a super cramped, super frustrating Item World.
I think if they had DD2's system of passive apt. growth, coupled with D5's active apt. growth, they'd hit the perfect balance. You could have characters slowly level while you're doing other things via the demon training, and if you really want to max someone out in a short amount of time, actually take them to the Chara world for big gains.
However. giving how NIS is good at fixing problems we didn't even know were present, chances are they're gonna have an even better chara world come D6.

If they made a squad that gave its members a 1% of aptitude to a random stat for every day that passes, so that I can either enter chara world for that intensive +5% to everything, while leaving a few characters in the squad forever to max them while I did other stuff, it'd be perfect. Honestly I didn't mind chara world so much in 3 and 4, with a good runner it didn't take that long. Chara world doesn't really take long either and I haven't died in forever, but maybe being so different from everything else makes it a bit like playing a different game which you could be not in the mood for, you know what I mean?

Yeah, I think the problem with D3/D4's chara world wasn't really that it was a different item world, but because it played like...Fire Emblem, maybe? Where your movement is severely limited, and your goals change from "clear the stage" to "navigate this cramped hallway in under 3 turns". Not bad, just not what you're used to when you turn Disgaea on. Oddly enough, I feel like D5's Chara world fits right in, but that's probably because of how many little things NIS put in it, and who ISN'T down for a little Mario Party every now and then?
