After being disillusioned by console gaming in the past couple of years I have decided to switch to PC. This is mostly due to the fact that I no longer enjoy the types of games offered on my PS4. I want a deeper experience in my gaming and the freedom to play older titles I miss.

Is a 960 overkill if I plan on playing mostly gsg/simulation games etc. at 1080p?

>Is a 960 overkill if I plan on playing mostly gsg/simulation games etc. at 1080p?

Considering Paradox can't program no. CPU is just as important for grand strategies, though.
>>
>>343995886
Just get an RX 480 or a GTX 970. They're the perfect 1080p gaming gpus and will last longer than a 960.
>>
>>343995886
wait for 1060 or buy 480
>>
>>343995886
960 is obsolete already (and was bad price/performance since it was released desu senpai), I dont think it will handle simulation games very well

these >>343996214 are better choices, 1060 in a couple days too
>>
>>343995886
1060 is great, but 970 is good as well.
You can get 480, but be aware, that if you have a cheap motherboard, it might cause damage to it, because of the fucked voltage and energy drain that card has.
>>
>>343995886
Even GTX 1080s won't be able to hit 60 fps at 1080p on newer titles thanks to shit like God rays.
>>
Hey a 480. Theres literally zero reason to get a 970 since that and the 1070 are out.
>>
>>343996994
God rays are mostly CPU based.
Unless you're talking about the volumetric light in Fallout 4. That shit's just broken and bethesda can't code anything for shit.

not OP, but Im on the fence in terms of upgrading

What get?
>>
>>343995886
I've got a 750 xti, and it isn't really enough for max settings nowdays. I'm thinking about making the jump right up to a 1080 gtx.

Is there anything I should be aware of for these newer cards?
>>
>>343997373
an ssd to stick windows 7 in and pay out the nose for a 1070 since you're sucking that nvidia dick
>>
>>343997527
but i already got 7tb of storage i dont need more storage right now

Im not an nvidia purist i bought all the parts new a few years back but the 8800 gts was a hand me down
>>
>>343995886
I have a 960 and I highly suggest that you get the rx480 or just wait for 1060.
>>
Will the RX470 be good enough for 1080p or should I let nvidia jew me out with the 1060 6GB version since they won't release a 4GB one?
>>
>>343997628
the ssd is not for storage, the ssd is to go fast, if you don't want to go fast jump off this board back into neppit
>>
>>343997373

Idk how you have that cpu with and gpu

The cpu is good. What's your budget?

Realistically the only options are the 480 or the 1070. Though a 390/390x is fine if you can find it on the cheap.

I'm waiting on the 490 so I can wait with my 760 for now.

So yea the 8gb 480 or a cheaper 390/390x is the best you can do if you must have a card now.

>>

How are you budgeting 1200 in a 950 rig? Are you buying an expensive monitor, kB and mouse?

Btw bro there's still negligible difference between an i5's performance and an i7.

not bad at all, think this might be a day 1 buy for me.

people say this but then try playing Planetside 2 or some other really CPU bound game and regret losing frames over i5 vs i7

Not only is the 960 obsolete now, it's been obsolete since launch. Day 1 it was outclassed by the 280X for the same price or cheaper, and the 380 kept it going. It's never been a good card for its price.

Anyway, go for a Sapphire Nitro 480 8GB when that comes out, or a good 970 if you can find it for around $240 or cheaper. Or you can wait a little longer and pay a little more to get a little more performance with the GTX 1060. Wait for an EVGA ACX cooled model if you're going for that one.

I'm looking to replace my 760 and I figured a 970-1070 would be good but why the fuck are 980s as or more expensive as 1070s? Why is the 1070 $450+ when it was revealed at a $370 MSRP? And why are 980ti a bit cheaper than regular 980?
>>
>>344001146

>Why is the 1070 $450+ when it was revealed at a $370 MSRP?

Nvidia lied.

>And why are 980ti a bit cheaper than regular 980?

That I find unlikely.
>>
>>344001146
there's a 980 on newegg right now for 330 bucks.
>>
>>344001146
Nvidia decided to release the Founder Edition, a reference card charger over MSRP. The AIB partners decided that they don't have to listen to the MSRP, since the only alternative is to buy the Founders Edition. Also the supply for both is fucking low, and the result is 1080s selling for $2000 on Amazon.

More like chump edition - that ancient cooler can't even maintain boost clocks for long. Funnily enough it can hold them juuuuuuust long enough for the typical review benchmark.

Hell the new high bandwidth sli bridges are just two of the old ones bolted together.

speccy always reports the memory wrong on 980tis
>>
>>344001320
Well the ones I've seen are the OC models, which are cheaper by around 30-50
>>344001623
The stock model though. I could also get the MSi armor 2x but my CPU is just a 4430, not a K, so having an OC card would be pointless

Some games will eat as much hardware as you can throw at them. Plus resolution is a huge factor into where a bottleneck can occur. If you play at 4k for example cpu is irrelevant as no gpu is fast enough for cpu to matter (see pic).

Equally at lower resolutions a cpu can indeed throttle a gpu, but thats a bit more complicated to address.

Lastly you are ALWAYS bottlenecked somehwere along the line - be it your cpu, gpu or potentially HDD or ram. Until you have components that are infinitely fast there will always be a slow part of the chain.
>>
>>344003457
>Equally at lower resolutions a cpu can indeed throttle a gpu, but thats a bit more complicated to address.

So if I have a 1080p monitor then getting a 1070 is actually detrimental even if I plan on getting a better one?
>>
>>344004820
if you're doing 1080p still with that card, get a 144hz one and DSR 1440 or 4K depending on the game
>>
>>344004820

It will never be detrimental - just merely ineffecient. If you plan on upgrading your monitor soon then buying the gpu now makes no real difference.
>>
