I almost got one at a flea market a few days back but the nigga was selling it for 80 dollars loose, with a crappy third party controller and possibly missing the input cable. Wouldn't give a game for free either, the only game he had was a crappy Warhammer game he wanted 40 bucks for and the case was cracked.

It was designed first and foremost as a 2D powerhouse, which simply wasn't acceptable for a fifth-gen console since 3D was the future.
There's also the fact that almost anything worth owning didn't get localized or came out at the ass-end of its life.
Nevermind the ridiculous price compared to the PS1, the fact that sega fucked over multiple distributors which made them not want to work with them at all (which obviously hurt sales) and the fact that it never had a "real" sonic game released for it. Like, I love nights into dreams and burning rangers, but those are never gonna be household names the same way sonic is.

I don't know where this saying came from, I decided to try for myself to see how hard it is to program for the Saturn. As far as I can tell the "hardest" thing about is that there's no 3D acceleration but instead two powerful 2D GPUs. I made a plugin for blender to convert 3D models into sprite tables so it's not an issue anymore. I quite like the hardware actually maybe I'll come back and turn my tech demo into a full homebrew game or something.

I think many programmers just weren't up to that level back in the day, especially those inexperienced in ASSEMBLY.
Companies that did ports often half-assed it (DOOM for instance) even those that did it internally such as SOTN done by a Konami B-Team fucked up the transparencies, increased load times, and lowered framerates with their shoddy port because of the way SOTN renders sprites.
Keep in mind the Saturn's architecture of 2 CPUs and confusing GPU stuff from what I've read, and you've got a system that lacked the American support that the Genesis had because 50% of programmers just couldn't handle it

Well I did hear a notorious story about the Doom port of the Saturn one of the developers commented on how their port was deliberately crippled by Carmack because he didn't like the way the VDP1 and VDP2 rendered the graphics so he forced the dev team to rewrite the entire rendering engine in software.
