So, which are the best Initial D games? I've tried a few of the arcade ones and 3rd Stage was pretty fun. No one seems to have uploaded any of the later ones though.

Kaido2 scratched the itch for me back on my D kick. Great selection of tracks and a Gran Turismoesque selection of japo cars. Plenty of customization as well. Wasn't too big on the music but if you're playing this sort of game obviously you're WELCOME TO THE BROKEN LOW so it's a non-issue.
It's a lot of fun if you're looking for togue, great pickup for how cheap it is (translators notes in the manual still a good laugh)

Ok then. It's a great game once you get used to the handling so don't expect to be able to do well right away, the skill floor is up there.
Most cars in the game including 4wDs will feel a bit slippery so make sure you account for a slight lack of grip whenever you turn.
The basic way to take sharp turns and hairpins is to brake early and downshift while hitting the gas at the apex just like normal turning technique. There are more advanced techniques such as eraser, TST, machine-gun shifting, 5-in-4-out etc. There might be tutorials on Youtube for those but just focus on getting thru the turns for now, and use the map to guesstimate for upcoming turns how much you'll need to brake and turn.
If you want to get used to the courses you can get a PSP or emulator and play Street Stage, it's exactly the same as Arcade Stage 3 but with fucked up controls.
