They kind of were. Hewie is not that much help apart from a handful of puzzles that require him and the fact that he can occasionally briefly delay the person chasing you, which is only actually beneficial under certain circumstances.
They somewhat have my sympathies. It's kind of important that the dog is somewhat unresponsive and difficult to control, otherwise it doesn't feel like a real dog, it just feels like a game "tool". But if that's the case maybe the gimmick isn't worth it?

I played it as a kid but it was too "weird" for me so i never finished it, i think i got the end of Daniela segment. I did beat it to Fiona a few times since i was depraved for stuff to fap and they had those sweet jiggle physics in the game.

I was thinking more how old games have hair or skin that looks plastic or kinda off color or hair that just kinda looks glued in place. Fiona and Heather sort of have that incorporated into the design rather than it being an artifact of the system they're on. The fact that they aren't in perfect condition hides graphical shortcomings that would stand out more if they were supposed to look all prim and pristine.
And Fiona actually has a fair amount of physics applied to her if I remember straight. Not just her tits but her skirt and ponytail both wave about. But they're simple enough to avoid any clipping like you said.

The game is somewhat vague on what that actually means, and also appears to be somewhat inconsistent, but it's apparently a real alchemical term that has something to do with transformation. One person maniacally tears her flesh apart to get it, another seems to eat her to get it and the final guy seems to not want it for himself but to use it to grow a clone of himself inside her. Considering all the fancy laboratory equipment and shit around the place I assume this isn't achieved by sticking his dick in her. I don't think there is ever any actual rape in the game, it's just the sound effects are ambiguous enough for people with a dirty mind to be able to go there.

Rule of Rose is awful because of forced combat, Haunting Ground can be awful because of villains who just won't leave you alone long enough to actually solve the puzzle you're on. Not that they're hard, but you can't interact with puzzles while you're being chased. However, you can use bombs/Hewie to kill the bad guys and even farm equipment that makes the game super easy as long as you have the patience.

I'd say so. The only thing I'd really say is aggravating is if you don't treat Hewie nice he just won't listen to you sometimes which will get you killed. It's not really a problem as long as you praise him when he does shit right. The game also actually moves at a decent clip. Not trapped in that shithole of an airship for hours.

Yeah, controls were easily one of the worst aspects of the game. On one hand I do feel like the game isn't great, but on the other hand I feel kinda bad that it sold horribly and the chances of any improvement in a sequel are probably next to non existent.
