That's because of duds and toxic gas that contaminated soil, mines in WW1 sense meant digging a tunnel under enemy trenches and blowing it up or setting up explosives on no man's land and wiring them together to blow up enemy counter attack, nobody has laid minefield as we know them though because back then, the only method to detect them on field was getting your bayonet and probing the ground inch by inch, which would basically turn the war into situation where no side would be able to even attack each other, let alone attack successfully.
