Many people want to play as characters that reflect their own characteristics to be their proxy in the game world. The fantasy they want to live out is not who they wish they were, but things they wish to experience.
When I make a character in an RPG I *could* make him 7 feet tall with a 6 pack and a perfect jawline and all that. But I don't, I give him features close to my own average self because that makes it easier for me to project myself into the character and get immersed in what they're experiencing.
