Have it in one game.

I agree, but the problem is that the 'diversity' is just tokenism to show how progressive they are. Gay characters are worse than caricatures and every time a black character shows up, he has the exact same personality as all the other black characters you've ever seen. It's doing more harm than good.
What you're supposed to do is design the character's personality and plot significance, then decide the appearance including race, then modify the personality and other character's reactions to suit how a person of that color, gender, and orientation would be treated.
What game developers do is decide they want a black or gay character, shoehorn him in, and call it a day. Sometimes they'll hammer him into the plot somehow if they're feeling generous.

That is, to fill a quota and get attention, rather than making those choices based upon the target audience, the needs of the plot or any other actual factors that would matter.
