There was an interesting article about this a couple years back
The devs regretted putting them in after the response it got. Now the game is only known for all its memes and nothing else. It was all at the suggestion of this one staff member who really loved memes and convinced the rest of them to put them in the game.
I don't think they'll be doing that again.
