So, what's the best way to get into Dragon Quest? I'm emulating IV on my PC using DeSmuME. It's pretty basic, but I'm enjoying it so far. I finished the 1st chapter last night. Is it a good one to start with? Any pointers?
Kill yourself PCuck pirate scum
>>343824149
dude everyone emulates even normies emulate on their phones
>>343824054
yeah, you're fine
play V and VI afterwards
Personally there's 3 games
DQ1: Just to play the first game and move on to 2 then 3.
DQ4: Gives a basic sense of exploring without any handholding. NES is still nice if a bit archaic to some. DS is really good but some don't enjoy the localization which sadly took out the Party Chat. iOS is the DS with Party Chat.
DQ8: Modern idea of Dragon Quest. With big open world to explore. 3DS is coming soon which adds a lot of new things. People don't like how it looks but the outside of that the game seem to be the best version to play.
>>343824675
>iOS is the DS with Party Chat.
I wish the iOS versions weren't locked to portrait mode. IO can't stand playing it that way. I'd gladly play them if I could just play them in landscape mode.
>>343824054
IV's a fine place to start. I started with the first and went from there, myself.
I-II alright if you keep in mind the time period they came out in. II can get pretty annoying at times though. III is just plain great, play the SFC or GBC version at some point. V is another great one, play the PS2 or GBA version. VI is one of the worst I think. VII 3DS is pretty great, consider giving it a shot when it comes out in English. VIII's another fine starting point. The 3DS version of it is pretty good too, but it'll be awhile before it gets an English release. IX's alright I guess.
All this rambling to say:
III-V, and VIII and even VIII if you have no social life, are all good places to start.
3 is pretty straight forward with party creation and classes.
4 is great, but you play each character, and then team up.
5 got a fan fucking tastic story, but most party members are monsters, and it is a bit like Pokemon. I prefer talking human characters, but still, it's such a great game.
6 and 9 should you play when you've finished some dq games. 7 and 8 are coming out on 3ds in a wee bit
>>343825591
>I prefer talking human characters
Same here, that's why the thing that most people really enjoy about DQ V brings it down a little for me. Overall, a great game anyway.
>>343825863
>>343825591
>5 got a fan fucking tastic story, but most party members are monsters, and it is a bit like Pokemon. I prefer talking human characters, but still, it's such a great game.
I'm the exact opposite, honestly. I'd like to be able to recruit enemy monsters or monstrous party members in other RPG games.
My biggest beef with modern Final Fantasy games is that the party is always entirely humans. FFX and FFXII have one "furry" humanoid thrown in there to mix it up a bit, but it's not the same. I want to have characters like Yeti, Cait Sith, Red XIII, Quina, etc.
>>343825591I just like the feeling of traveling and fighting with my family.
Feel like once that happens I just stop caring about the monsters outside of using them to heal my party and field spells like Evac.
>>343826189
FF12 was such a shit show in a lot of ways and that was one of them. You had a world with tons of different races working together but they decided to keep everything human (Don't care what everyone says she was a human to me).
>>343826189
>My biggest beef with modern Final Fantasy games is that the party is always entirely humans
Same here. I didn't really explain well. I just meant that I liked set party members with a personality. I don't care if one of them is a cat or a monster, it's all good. It's just that most party members in DQ V are personality-less monsters.
posting 2nd best DQ
>>343826440
>FF12 was such a shit show in a lot of ways and that was one of them.
Oh good, I was beginning to wonder if I was the only person left who hadn't started liking FF XII within the last ten years. I hated it when it came out for a lot of reasons (really, I haven't had a lot of fun with FF since FF IX), but when I say that now everyone just calls me a Lightning fan.
>>343826475
I disagree but can definitely understand why you would want that.
As long as the monster has cool attacks and a cool design, they can be silent the whole game, and it wouldn't bother me, really. I remember playing Disgaea 1 back in high school and being excited that I could put random monsters in my party, e.g. zombies. Then, my happiness faded when I realized that they have very limited attacks and are just shit.
>>343826636
>>343826440
I love FF12 but hate the characters that were chosen for your main party. There's so many cool races just sitting around town, but you get stuck with a bunch of humans with forgettable personalities.
The license system was fun for me, though. I liked being able to just make any party that I want and even switch stuff around mid-game if I get bored.
>>343824054
>>343826636
I hated it around the start. I hated the gambit system. I hated Vaan. I hated how open it was trying to be with nothing really inbetween. I hated the license board.
And the Zodiac doesn't seem like it really did anything to make me enjoy it better.
And I'm a bit of the same but with FF10. But I played it at a time when I was dealing with a lot of issues and could relate with Tidus. So I still hold fond thoughts on that game.
>>343826885
>There's so many cool races just sitting around town
There's also 50-100 people sitting in each town. But you only need to talk to 3 people at most. This, added with all the huge unused space, made FFXII feel like nothing but wasted potential. There's more to interact with in the starting town of DQVIII than the entire game of FFXII.
What are the main difference between DQ and FF? In terms of story, combat, and style.
DQ seems to have more children friendly designs, a simpler story, and more customizable party members with different equipable weapons. Is that accurate?
>>343824149
Stay mad shitter
>>343827449
Final Fantasy focuses on story and cinematics over everything. It also tries to change itself with every sequel, which sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.
Dragon Quest focuses on NPC interaction, item progression and exploration over story, while still having some really good stories. I would venture to say that the stories in DQ games are still better than Final Fantasy games because of how they are presented. They are character driven, allow the player to uncover them at their own pace and just have better flow. Aside from all this, Dragon Quest keeps what worked in previous games and adds to it with each sequel.
>DQ seems to have more children friendly designs, a simpler story, and more customizable party members with different equipable weapons. Is that accurate?
No.
>>343824054
I - SNES
II - SNES
III - SNES or GBC (SNES is better overall, GBC has a couple more extras.)
IV - DS or Mobile (Mobile version has Party Chat restored, is otherwise identical to DS version.)
V - DS or PS2 (DS has an additional waifu to marry, PS2 has better graphics.)
VI - DS
VII - PS1 (3DS version isn't in English, not yet anyway)
VIII - PS2 (Mobile version is gutted, 3DS version not in English yet.)
IX - DS
X - lol never ever
>>343827449
FF is more blunt about it's story. Tends to be more flashy. And always tries to do new things with it's combat.
DQ is much more subtle in it's story (getting down right depressing once you get into certain NPCs). They hold back on spectacle (hell it took until DQ8 before you can see your characters in battle). And keep the same turn base system with small changes with that system (adding classes, monster recruitment, skill selections, ect.).
As for design one of the key things about DQ is that 3 people has been part of DQ since the start. Horii for story and gameplay idea, Sugiyama for music, and Toriyama for looks. Which is much different than FF which changed a lot of hands over the decades.
>>343826975
The only problems I have with this image is 5 is part of the Zenthian Trilogy, so there are ties there. Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 has ties to 6, but they are a bit small.
>>343828553
But DQIV-VI can be played out of order and not really miss any story. You just miss a couple loose connections to the Zenithia tower and dragon. And the weapons I guess.
>>343824054
>I'm emulating IV on my PC using DeSmuME
dq4 ds got fucked during localization. its missing 60% of the text (party chat) and every town has terribly written accents.
ideally if you want to play dq4, get the phone version. it has the party chat restored (but still has the accents...)
>>343828054
>>343827925
Do all DQ games take place in the same world?
>>343828771
That's true there. I am use to going through the DQ series in numerical order that I tend to forget that part.
>>343828860
>party chat
Who cares? Does anyone actually bother with that shit?
>>343828958
Only I-III and IV-VI are connected worlds. The others are self contained. And DQVIII even implies its an alternate dimension to the other games because of the godbird.
>>343828958
I-III are a world, IV-VI are another, the rest are standalone with no connections.
Make sure to check out some of the spinoffs too. Dragon Quest Monsters is fucking GOATexcept for Joker
>>343829085
>Does anyone actually bother with that shit?
If they didn't, then they wouldn't keep putting it in the games.
>>343828958
1-3 has it's own story that really should be played in order to get the full experience.
4-6 takes place in the same world but it's so loosely connected that it doesn't really matter.
>>343829085
I do. I love Party Chat. Used it all the time in DQ7 PSX.
>>343829085
I do. It shows the personality of your characters and their commentary about people or locations adds to the world.
will we ever get DQ1-3 rereleased, I just want to finish my collection
>>343828860
>get the phone version
I can't play with touch controls and forced portrait mode. Maybe if it had the option to play in landscape.
>>343830694
its shitty but you gotta deal if you want to play dq4 full.
i got used to it eventually and also got dq5/dq6 on mobile.
Tried playing DQ I-II after beating DQIII and it feels like the dullest shit in the world, do I slog through? Thinking I'll drop it and just wait until DQVII.
>>343831180
That's why you should have started with I and II. They can be finished in a couple of days, but you aren't a nut of a completion like I am, just skip them.

>Recommending the buttugly DS games
PS2 V > DS V
The extra wife is shit anyways
The remakes of VI have a few big changes but I haven't played either DS or iOS/Android version but at least they made the latter not look like shit
I mean, luckily we still have the SNES versions, not sure what they changed with the remakes of IV (if I'm not mistaken you could only give the Hero direct commands while the other party member were AI)
I kinda hate and like how they got rid of obstructed views
I mean, I started with the DS games too but I think the beautiful sprites and animation are wasted on everything else
>>343833230
>being a graphic whore
>>343826975
The best versions of 1 and 2 are actually the mobile versions.
>>343833719
Not with those horrible new translations. And the games themselves are desaturated ports of the SNES games.
>>343824054
They're best on iOS/android for 1-6.
>>343825448
Why you gotta hate on VI? It actually has a class system as opposed to the two entries before it. It's got two worlds and some awesome party members too.
>>343833292
If there was an english translation I would probably recommend the PS1 version of IV. I can't find much info about it but the gameplay videos look fine.
Just fuck the DS versions. I think something is wrong with the colors.
It's just so unpleasing to look at, maybe something is wrong with the colors
>>343834136
I just found it really boring compared to most other games in the series.
>>343834618
Is this bait? The DS version is just a port of the PSX version.
Should I get 7 on 3ds when it comes out?
you don't. Its the most banal boring casual shit jrpg and rpg franchise in history.
>>343835147
What would recommend, kid?
>>343835147
>anything not-Wizardry
>not casualized
>>343834981
Not entirely. I really think it's the colors

>>343835138
Do you even need to ask?
>>343834981
Not really. There are slight graphical differences (I remember noticing some extra detail when watching videos of the DS version) and the way the Immigrant Town and recruiting is completely different. In the PSX version, you can find recruitable people (and monsters) in specific locations randomly. Due to this randomness, you can finish the town as soon as you learn of it. The town has like, eight different final forms, each of which have items you can only get in that form. If you want *everything* you'll have to kick some people out of town and go recruiting again to get a different final form. The type of people you recruit (all women, a lot of royalty or farmers or monsters) determines the final version of the town you get. One really nice thing about it is you can get an Angel Leotard from a shop if you fill the town with nothing but women (Vivian, the crossdressing "bunny girl" counts as a girl, I found out when I recruited "her" and still got the women's only version of the town).
You also don't get the bag until chapter 5, so no stocking up on 99 Swords of Evil's Bane or whatever they're called in the English version, as Torneko (though you can still fill your inventory with them and get a nice gold boost when you sell them in chapter 5).
Those are all the differences I know of, aside from some minor things not worth mentioning.
>>343835138
If you've never played VII, yes. If you have, the answer is still yes.
>>343838497
Oh, do tell?
>>343839630
Not much to tell, it's just a fun game. It's also quite different from the PSX version from all the changes I've read (I've played the 3DS version, but not the PSX one), so it still sounds worth it.
>>343839630
Not him but DQ7 is considered one of the best Dragon Quest game. The only real problem with the PSX is that sometimes it feel like the pacing is fucked. 3DS pretty much smooth all that out. If you want a wonderful JRPG get it.
>>343824054
I'm going for a jog and starting DQ2 when I get home.
DQ1 was really fun for me. Emulated the SNES version on my phone.
>>343835138
I'm getting it.
I have the PS1 version but there are other games I'm playing right now.
I'll be done with my current backlog by then
we're getting this thing too
>go to the /vr/ thread
>it's all about Sofia's pubic hair or Alena's armpit stubble
Yup.

>VII comes out near FFXV's release
>Builders comes out near WoFF's release
I fucking hate Square.
>>343841691
I can't wait, I genuinely want to try it
>>343824054
Mobile versions of I&II, III, IV, V and VI are great, people just like to shit on it cuz mobile. For the english speaking audience they are the way to go, highest quality and a good way to actually support the series in the US instead of pirating and showing S-E they're right to not bring anything over state side.
>>343841932
or it's about that one autist sperging out about the remakes
>>343842106
I dare someone to play the original MSX or Famicom versions of the games. I FUCKING DARE THEM.
>>343824149
>>343842395

>>343843836
Even more unforgiving than those versions
>>343843836
Unbalanced, very poor spritework, hell there's literally ONE sprite for your hero in the first game on Famicom/MSX.
The NES version improves the original game IN EVERY WAY.
>>343842021
>people just like to shit on it cuz mobile
Or because they're locked to portrait orientation. Who the fuck wants to play a d-pad based game like that.
>>343846541
What's wrong with it being portrait orientation?
>>343847635
feels awful
>>343848216
I care way, way less how an ancient rpg like DQ 'feels' in this day and age. I can get from point a to point b in a convenient package, more than good enough.
chrono trigger on mobile? yeah that feels substantially worse, even without portrait mode.
>>343848216
You can cozily play with only one hand and the portrait orientation is perfect for battle. I honestly don't see what's the issue with it.
