Never got around to playing this. Level design seems a bit bland, but the core of it always looked more interesting than other 3D action games of the same time period.
Love the Shinobi series in general, though. The 3DS game is excellent--definitely a pleasant surprise, though it's clear it could have used a bigger budget.

It's level design is very gamey for lack of a better word. It's made to utilize the wall run mechanic as well as the dashes.

The camera is bad, the platforming is fucking horrid and the final boss has heavy RNG elements. Beyond that though the core mechanic is fucking awesome and it's a real good feeling chaining multiple enemies together.
It's real neat how you need to be speedy and go for back stabs in order to get every enemy. I only ever used he explosion power up and I don't think I ever really used the charge move.

this game is the fucking definition of Git Gud. I rebought the game on my PS3 because I could never find a copy for PS2. holy shit I suck ass. I'm Level 5-2 and this fucking shit won't let up. I love it.
I remember on PS2 I got to the final boss and could never one shot him. I got a purple sword and took half his health, then the faggot cut the wallrunning boards at the back and called in a meteor storm and icy touch of death.

I played and beat this when it was released and I was 11 at the time. Either my memory of how hard it was is all jumbled up or it wasn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

As a huge fan who owns both on PS2 and just rebeat Shinobi last year, I can say there are a couple places that are as hard if not maybe harder in nightshade. Mainly Kurohagane, the final boss. He was definitely a whole different level of bullshit from Hiruko.
Really liked how Kurohagane was basically a super fast evil version of Hotsuma.

It's only really the final boss that's hard, most of the bosses could be 1 shotted and the stages weren't particularly hard outside of the white lab one and the final stage.
Also the fucking statue boss was horrid. No way to tell if it has iframes, which can easily result in you dying.
