You can use a mushroom right into someone who has a good idea like a red shell and get their item.
You can also save an item you want to use by just using the one item slot and switch back whenever you want to get a new item that isn't the one you want to save.

I can get how people could see the specials as broken but they're literally not. Because they're all broken, none of them are broken.
And they don't even give that much of an advantage in a race.
No item is overpowered.
No item is even underpowered, not even the Big Banana, which is actually one of the best.
Not even the chain chomp or golden shroom is overpowered, they're both hard to control, and the chainchomp will often fuck you up at the end.
The fireballs are basic but are quite useful. Standard really, no risk, no reward.
I won't describe them all but you get the picture. Overall you're definitely right about them being a blast, but I just feel I have to say, they're not broken if you're good. They only enhance the experience.
I've played 4, 6-10, Awakening, and Fates and Roy's game is easily my least favorite FE. The entire game is just forgettable.

More content doesnt necessarily make it better. Pikmin 1 was the shortest in the series and is still better than 2. 2 has cool enemies, the piklopedia is great and the music is awesome but thats it.
