What is the best Total war game? Discuss.
>>
Mechanically probably Attila but some people get turned off by the setting
>>
>>343781705
Medieval 1
M2 has the best mods though
>>
Rome I and Medeival 2.
Only thing that pisses me off in Medeival 2 is the dumb Ai that declares war to you for no fucking reason within 5 turns. I installed the "Ultimate AI" mod and the AI does feel smarter without any random declarations of war or betrayals without a good reason and such

Medieval 2 and rome 1 are overrated. They are incredibly flawed in many ways, especially med 2 with its multiple downright broken game mechanics. Still great though.

If mods are included id say either Bellum Crucis for medieval 2, DEI for rome 2 or TROM3 for shogun are the best total war fun times. Just choose favorite setting.

Medieval 2 with mods.

Isn't that pretty much how medieval history went?

I don't really know, but I liked Empire the most, and Shogun 2 as close second. I tried out Medieval 2, Rome 2 and Attila but didn't like them, and bought a couple of weeks ago the new Warhammer one and was very-very disappointed.

Why can't they just make a new Empire game?

That's a very unique taste you have there.

>>
>>343785212
Why? I love that era and when I was younger I played the shit out of Cossacks which has a similar setting.
>>
>>343785272
My one and only complaint with the game is the lack of faction variety, but that's because of the setting. Feudal Japan is still fucking great and FotS really spiced things up.
>US Marines
>>
>>343785141
>But I liked Empire the most
Same. Still play that and Napoleon all the time. Shogun 2 I would argue is objectively the best in the series though. Rome 2 and Attila are also great. Safe to say that Warhammer and Medieval 2 are by far the worst and should be scratched from the record.

In terms of balance and design and shit it's probably Attilla or Fall of the Samurai.

I've been having an absolute blast with Warhammer total war though, to the point where it's becoming my favorite.
>>
>>343782351
It doesn't declare war on you for no reason. The point system from Shogun 2 where you can just how bad or good your relation is, has always been present in the game. It was just made visible to the player in S2.

I feel like Shogun 2 had the most non broken diplomacy in the entire series as well. They really did a good job with hostages and negotiation.
>>
Medieval 2 seems kinda broken honestly, speaking as someone who has only played Rome 1 and Shogun 2
The AI doesn't seem to know what to do when it comes to sieges
>breaks like 5 holes in my wall
>still just stands in the field doing nothing
Also cavalry charges just seem to not work, where they stop using their lances at the very last second
>>
Shogun 2 was the last great total war game
>>
>>343781705
Warhammer is my favourite because it's really fun and I love fantasy.

However I don't feel that Warhammer can be measured on the same metric as the other total war games, it's too different mechanically from every other TW game.

So I would have to say Shogun 2 is the best of the 'genuine' TW games, at least in my opinion.
>>
In Shogun 2 is there a timer for CPU initiated battles? There's been a couple of times where I've been massively overpopulated and when the battle start the computer just has its entire army sit there. I tried to wait out the timer to win, but after about 15 minutes of 3x speed I charged their lines.
>>
>>343785562

Geez why so hostile to m2?
>>
Literally all crap.
>>
>>343785272

Only thing that annoys me is that your vassals turn on you when realm divide happens. There's no point of keeping vassals before that happens.
>>
>>343786376

I think the broken cavalry charge is the only real thing that infuriates me. For some reason it works fine on Teutonic and Britannia just not the other modes
>>
>>343781705
Medieval 2 was my favorite in the series for almost a decade and then a month ago I tried Napoleon.

Wow. Game has blown me away. The setting fascinates me and I have learned so much about the time period playing it and then doing my own research.

The canon and bullet mechanics feel so good and rewarding when they hit home.

Seeing a line of men scattered like rag dolls by shot is just pure gratification.

I think my only complaint is that there aren't as many unique feeling units in the game in any other sense aside from they just take a unit, give it a special name and jack its stats through the roof (I'm looking at you English Royal Guard Infantry).

I also wish that the campaign AI wasn't so predetermined to ally with the same factions every time, but I can deal with it.

Either way it's my new favorite game and as I type this I am ordering food so I can eat while watching Waterloo.
>>
>>343786670
Not hostile, it's just shit.
>>
>>343786961
Yeah, vassals are really pointless in the game. I only ever make them in the first 40 turns. After that I dont risk it.
>>
Played Rome, Medieval II, Alexander and Attilla. Just picked war hammer up this week.

I gotta say war hammer. As a man who struggles in empire management and does really well in battles I really like the province system. I don't feel like its been simplified, at least not if you've limited hero abilities.

More than anything its interesting to see a game push the total war model so far interesting directions.
>>
Napoleon by far

But I'm biased because Waterloo is my favourite movie

Got the blood for the blood god DLC with dismemberments, decapitations, bodies literally exploding and blowing up, undead fighting with their heads off, and holy shit am I having fun with Warhammer again.

Now THIS is Warhammer.
>>
Medieval 2. It had the best campaign map, great battles, tons of awesome mods, and the graphics still hold up 10 years later. Rome 1 probably has the best battles/MP by a hair. Everything since Medieval 2 has streamlined the campaign map so that it's not really a game by itself anymore and made the battles feel completely weightless. Also DLC out the ass and no mods.

Shogun 2 and then Medieval or Medieval 2 for mods. I have to be honest though, I'm not very good at the new TW and the friends who like the series love every single game, but playing Rome 2 was pretty horrendous. The incredible disgusting UI was making it impossible to play and when I would get it into it shit would become buggy at any given point even in the latest version. I think that's probably one of the major points why I just can't play any TW after Shogun2 anymore.
>>
>>343787328

And this is why I never pay for Total War games.
>>
>>343781705
Attila is by far my favorite

I don't mean to talk shit but I don't think M2 holds up very well
>>
>>343787695
There was a perfectly good reason for them to do it. Everything is fine :)
>>
>>343781705
I'd have to go with Shogun 2. The new Warhammer TW is good, but everything about it is so dumbed down that I can't call it the best, even though various elements like the AI are the best they've ever been in a vanilla TW game. Combat and city building got dumbed down hardcore.

Modded i'll have to say Empire or Napoopan.
Attila is probably the best TW game all around though (fuck you guys, i love the setting) but a lot of the management stuff feels really half-baked compared to more indepth games. Wish they'll expand on in other TW games.

Warhammer was fun for the first campaign but as of yet doesn't have a lot of staying power.

Medieval 2's point system had several bugs that were never fixed like occupying a city causes you to lose reputation points, massacring a city causes you to lose more reputation points, and looting a city causes you to lose even more reputation points than that in spite of the fact that fewer people die.

Answer the question
>>
My personal ranking:
Rome 2 > Attila > Napoleon > Shogun 2 > Warhammer > Rome 1 > Empire > Medieval 2

Attila seems have the best mechanics, but I prefer Rome's setting much more.

I would put Napoleon on the first place if the battle AI wasn't so poor.

Warhammer has high potential, but for now it lacks content.

Empire is interesting but similarly to Napoleon, AI (which is even worse) makes it unplayable for me.

Rome 1 and Medieval 2 were great for their time, but battle mechanics are poor compared to newer titles, and sometimes doesn't even work at all, as is the case with M2.

Started with Rome Total War back in the day. When Medieval 2 came out it pretty much devoured my life. AI was retarded without mods but I love the setting and the UI is simple and uncluttered unlike Rome 2.

Shogun 2 was a massive improvement over Empire and Napoleon (both of which I hated). Rome 2 is pretty decent and so is Attila, haven't played Warhammer.

If I had to rank them I'd say

1. Medieval 2
2. Rome 1
3. Shogun 2
4. Rome 2/Atitila
5. Empire/Napoleon

Empire was the last total war to have a good campaign. Later games are destroyed by terrible design decisions fueled by casualization. The battles themselves are getting better though, especially with the newer games having wicked charge mechanics.

It's setting's lack of variety lets it down a bit but Shogun 2 is so close to perfection.

My issue with the newer TWs is kinda stupid but here it goes.

In pretty much all of the TWs before Rome 2 the first 5 turns of a campaign were a fucking cakewalk, but that was often long enough for many factions to diverge from their starting positions to make each game a bit different.
eg:
You play as some Japanese clan, you wreck some easy rebels and take the castle of the clan you start at war at. Then you look around and see how everyone else faired in those first few turns and that dictates your next move. Then you can get into the brawn of the campaign and get some doomstacks having at each other

In Rome 2 and Attila though I find right from the start literally everyone has doomstacks within two turns and its possible to get bogged down in campaign decisive high stakes battles with 5 turns of the campaign starting. If I bother to play though that initial stage I then find the next 100 turns extremely easy as almost all the ai factions also got bogged down and weren't able to make themselves stronger so just get steamrolled by me later on

Medieval 2 for best mods. Shogun 2 is the best pure experience they've released, but I haven't played Attila or Warhammer so I'm not sure how good those are. All their DLC for their recent games is pretty annoying though.

I love the fuck out of Rome 1 but I can't stand how the AI always just slaps their units into a single flat line unless they're a Roman faction. Battles become a mess spread out across the whole map. At least Medieval 2 fixed that to some degree but it had even more problems.

To be quite honest Warhammer is one of my favorites so far. Heroes are fun to use and the unit variation is great. The campaign map, though detailed, leaves a lot to be desired but it's a hell of an upgrade from Rome 2.

Look, I seriously love Medieval 2 but there's some many little features that the more modern TWs have that ME2's lacking that stop me from playing it over Shogun 2.

Little things like how moving units around on castle walls and giving move orders inside cities is pretty tedious to get them to go exactly where you want. Can't loosely group units. Horses are crazy OP. Cant easily see the range of missile units. Worse diplomacy options than recent titles.

Every now and then I get really into a campaign again and do love playing it but those little things all add up and make it just less fun as a timesink for me

They maneuver like tanks, but certainly don't hit as hard.
Getting them to charge properly is in itself quite a feat, never mind getting your lategame, elite knights to break off without half the unit getting skewered by mod of angry peasants with pointy sticks.

My main issue with medieval 2 is it does not have multi-thread support, meaning PCs with many cores get shat on infinitely if you so much put unit size on large, and yeah, cavalry is too damn OP, and pikes are literal shit though some mods do balance them out.

warhammer is a really great game. the engine works well, heroes are well implemented and difference between all races makes the game really exciting even after many hours of gameplay.
problem is, the campaign ai still is pretty dumb, they removed some features from attila, there aren't settlement maps which were really interesting to play since you could fight a big army in small streets and still have a chance...

I feel like they could have done much better than this

For example, an early knight in chainmail will have HIGHER defence than a fucking plate-armoured Gothic Knight, and the Gothic Knight will cost MORE and will only be available in the late period. What the fuck is the point in using the Gothic Knight? Or another example where a standard sword+shield dismounted knight will have a HIGHER attack than a fucking Zweihander shock knight, and the Zweihander knight will have lower defence. What the fuck is the point in the Zweihander knight?
