I was buying another hard drive and figured I'd put Windows 10 on it separately. From what I remember, you have to unplug every other HDD/SSDand then install the OS onto the new one. Then once completed you can choose which you want to boot from.
I personally wanted to install Windows 10 in EFI mode, so I had downloaded a pre-activated Windows 8.1 iso onto a usb, then I put a Windows 10 installation onto the USB to install in EFI mode after the Windows 8.1 installation was complete. It worked like a charm and gave me an activated Windows 10.
I'm not sure if you can upgrade using the Windows update, as I didn't do that myself.

So far it offers no benefit at all if you have a decent CPU. It is mostly made for CPU efficiency to help the consoles, which have embarrassingly weak processors.
I have a four year old i5 3470 at stock clocks and DX12 has not improved any game for me. No game has maxed it out either. A few games let you choose APIs - switching from DX11 to DX12 gives me no gains or even slightly worse performance.
Plenty of console/PC multiplats have run fine on DX11 and opengl so I think MS is mostly using DX12 to raise the win10 install base.
