I bought the reproduction cartridge, it was a great buy, gotta be honest.
I was hyped as shit when I got it, I played it non-stop for a while, and the fact I could take it anywhere and play it on myDSwas incredible. I still play it sometimes, I've beaten the game about 3 times on the cartridge only and I want to play it again. It's a great game and the fact you can take it anywhere is a huge plus. with default names, it really annoys me when my DUDE WEED LMAO friends choose lolsorandum names for the characters that ruin the story for the entire ride. And while Earthbound works well with using you/your friends' names for Ness and crew (as a schoolkid adventure), Mother 3 feels much more like it's using established characters with their own stories

In Japan the series simply goes Mother - Mother 2 - Mother 3.
Mother was going to be localised as Earth Bound. The translated cartridge was never released, but was leaked much later. The team who dumped it patched the title screen to say "Earth Bound Zero", which is the name you usually find the NES rom under. The same rom became Earthbound Beginnings decades later and got an official release on Wii U.
Mother 2 was officially localised as Earthbound on SNES, but I'm not sure if it got a virtual console release.
Mother 1 and 2 were ported to GBA, but they weren't localised. A fan translation exists for the Mother 1 portion.
Mother 3 was never officially localised, but got a fan translation.

Earthbound Zero isn't that great. It's got way too much grind for its own good. You can play it if you're interested, but you might want to go with Mother 1+2 patched because that adds the easy ring item that increases XP.
Earthbound emulates perfectly fine in snes9x or whatever your favourite SNES emulator is.
Mother 3 is better on real hardware with a flashcart or a translated repro because of timing lag, but otherwise VBA-M should be fine for emulating.
