Let us take a moment to raise our glasses to those games that will never come back. Games we sometimes pop into to browse the servers, kill some bots, and reminisce about the good old times. Your home server. Your clan. Your friends. Your favorite map or game mode. Just reminisce.

Here's to you, Jedi Academy, and .|To|. clan. I will miss you, guys, and I still rewatch the "Goodbye" video on youtube sometimes.

Niggah this thread ain't about which game is objectively better. I played some JO too, and had a great mentor there. This thread is about personal experiences, and remembering my JA days makes my throat sting. Now, what game do you remember fondly?

Don't you guys find it extremely creepy and unsettling that those servers are eternally up, hosted god knows where by god knows whom, that have bots eternally matching up against one another, without any human getting into contact with them for maybe months or years at a time?

Also, Wolfeinstein: Enemy Territory is the nostalgia game for me.
>>
>>343762329
I just assume that anyone who hasn't experienced the death of a loved multiplayer experience is too young.
>>
>>343762410
Logging into one of those servers is always creepy as fuck. You always see a bot with hundreds of kills leading, racked up over the months since the last reset. It's like walking into a graveyard where the shadows dance.

heard a story about a guy who made a quake(dunno if it really was quake) server at his work. The bots "learned" rudimentary tactics in that game, Years later the servers were being replaced and he remebered the server so he checked on it.Their learning-protocolls were now in the sizes of Gigabyte. No fighting just bots waiting for the round to end.As soon as a player would kill one the rest would turn on him and kill him then wait and repeat.

I mean what has all of this come to? 99 and 2004 are mindblowing games fueled by adrenaline and multiplayer skill tests made for gamers by gamers.

99 puts other new game concepts to shame for fuck's sake.

>Player kills bot
>The bots all turn on the player for killing one of their kind

Extremely creepy. They understood that violence only generates more violence. Something humans would learn, if we could die more than once.
>>
>>343763458
I find mindboggling that a game with this graphics runs on my toaster at 60fps on high with so much draw distance and textures and polygons

Optimization magic or some shit i don't know how did they managed it back then
>>
i just want a classic enemy territory objective server with active audience and no modded bullshit or triple jumps or anything

i would play this until this day if not for this
>>
>>343764056
Optimization, basically. Hardware limitations forced the developers of the old school to optimize, code efficiently, make their software compatible with older hardware. Nowadays you can just slap out crufty shit shamelessly.
>>
>>343763918
>mindblowing games fueled by adrenaline and multiplayer skill tests made for gamers by gamers

There you have it. If games don't have hand holding so you can sate your sperging desire to be a special snowflake, getting kills even though you're a shitter, the game won't sell.

>MFW those late nights playing IGIB Capture the flag on CTF_Face][ will never return
>Those nights playing IGIB DM with 8 other friends on Deck-16

Feels bad man.
>>
>>343764276
Yeah it's annoying to think what we could have if devs took their time to think for a second with common sense and did optimization. Things like that reach bigger demographics that they never thought they could have.

UT2004 level of graphics right now are "good enough" for a videogame. They're not 64 levels anymore, yet, you don't really need chromatic aberration and stuff to make a game. Plus, the modding is super easy and looks great.

Just look at Face3 map. It's beautiful.
>>
>>343764467
> IGIB CTF_Face
Kek, most chaotic mode ever. Most people will mock you for the choice, but it's fun.

>>343764545
Style beats photorealistic tech any time. Optimization lets you use better tech, to serve style. Most devs nowadays do not make that effort, though.
>>
>>343764467
Even if you were a shitter there were tutorials for people, like 10 bot levels of AI from target practice dummies to map controlling/strategical terminators.

OH and just remembered it had AN ACTUAL GOOD CAMPAIGN.
>>
>>343763406
>even for a while after Academy came out.
>for a while
Yeah and now it's dead and Academy took over completely. And MB2 took another big chunk of both games as it should be
>>
>>343763918
Games aren't made for gamers anymore.
Games aren't made by gamers anymore.
Games aren't made to be finished. They need to be "done" well enough so that you can pack it and push it out the door, because your studio needs to start working on the next yearly rehash that already has a release date.

And it gets worse: There are no middle-sized developers in the industry anymore. The AAA companies bought them all, or they went out of business. Nowdays, it's either AAA or Indie, there's no in-between.

Yes, but you're expecting that the shitters would play against bots on their difficulty level.

They just jump in to multiplayer, expect weapons to be 1 hit wonders like in COD and then bawl their eyes because they didn't even receive a 2 man killstreak.

I mean, Fuck, COD even had DEATH streaks that really tried giving the shittiest of shitters an edge.

Jedi Academy is quake 3 engine. Some of the older empty servers seem to be acting the same way.
>>
>>343765559

What would happen if he'd reset the AI on a few of the bots?

How would the older bots react to the new playstyle? Would they reach a new meta, or would the new bots evolve to the same state the older bots are in?
>>
>>343763535
I know this feel familia, I have been searching for a fps multiplayer experience like CoD: UO since 2009 and I'm still searching...
>>
>>343762865
It's a really creepy thought that in the future AI might be so sophisticated that you could have a conscious entity forever stuck in a killing field.

Don't forget:
>Manage to get out of the open areas past the snipers
>The rest of the level is narrow corridors and stairs with blind corners and those grenade-throwing fucks around every corner

>>
>>343766814
Nar Shadda was no picnic.
What always got me were the dispruptor rifle snipers you couldn't block, that and the outside walkways were so narrow.
Good times.
>>
>>343767053
I vaguely remember it being possible to Force Dodge the sniper shots somehow, but it cost a lot of force to do it so if more than one was shooting at you it was almost completely useless.
I don't think I ever figured out how to do it on command, it only seemed to trigger when I least expected it. I should really reinstally and have another go, those games had pretty great depth to the mechanics.
>>
>>343767479
I think you have a chance of lucking out on it, but if Force Sense is on it's guaranteed.
>>
>kill some bots
God, if fucking ONLY the games I miss had bots. And the ones that do tend to have bad ones that aren't even that fun.

Is programming bots really that hard as to justify modern game devs not doing it anymore? I'm so tired of multiplayer-only games that don't have any bots meaning when the servers go down it's dead forever
>>
>>343767479
I have done that a few times, but never on purpose like you said. The reborns and purple alligator man would do it every try when I would go after them with the disruptor rifle.
That really was a solid game.
Still need to finish JA

I'll extend that to Star Wars in general. Disney will see to it that there's never a good Star Wars game again, and that those that were are erased from the cultural memory in order to sell more Disney™ Infinity 2™ toys.
>>
>>343768206
Well, bots would have helped out the new Battlefront for sure.
They aren't perfect, but sometimes you just wanna play a match by yourself.
They certainly helped 1 and 2's longevity.
>>
>>343768914
I might have actually bought that mess, admittedly at a discount, if I knew I would be able to hop back in and play a few laid back games against the computer a few years from now, but the way things are it feels like a waste knowing it'll be dead in a year

A year? Hell the PC community is dead now.
I popped on to check on it during May 4th. You know, thinking the unofficial Star Wars holiday(which they marketed around, and etc) would have an influx of people.
NOPE.
Still takes the server forever to find, that single match thats going on. Never on a mode you want, and definitely not with anything like a balanced team or the like.

>Optimization magic or some shit i don't know how did they managed it back then

the game runs so well because it is well designed and coded from the ground up.
modern games suffer from HUEG amounts of extremely contrived code, full of bloat and clutter and unnecessary shit. ut04 doesn't.

Its false. It's really just a semi decent creepy pasta tho.

Bots in quake 3 are very rudimentary and they don't learn anything. They just run around between pickups and shoot you with various levels of aimbot
Even the cpma ones that are improved don't do anything special. They don't even use movement properly.

Pretty sure 90% of anons in these threads are nostalgiafags unaware that most of these games have active scenes still. Not that that's a bad thing, because everyone is moving to discord because it makes it easier for new people to find them.
