Up until his car accident he was a really, really good writer. After the accident he dropped in quality considerably, BUT is still head and shoulders above everyone else in the business of genre books. Plus he doesn't stick with single genre either, which is helpful.

Yes, he is a fantastic writer (if you read the right book). Some of them are stinkers, but i'd say the majority is good to great, with a few being 10/10.
If you just wanna see him at his best, read The Dark Tower series, his magnum opus.

His only big problem is endings. His stories are full of suspense and wonder. But he always falls flat because he feels the need to give us too much information. IT was one of the best story I have ever read but the last 1/4 ruins the whole thing when he felt the need to explain the Turtle and all the other weirdness.

A washed-up author (because what else) living in Maine (because where else) finds a mysterious ukulele in his front lawn. Gradually, other strange objects begin turning up, and it turns out they are from a damaged cargo spaceship that was attacked by the forces of evil on another level of the Tower (because it's all the Tower). Shit goes down and the ending is mildly disappointing.

It's fun being a fan of his writing. For example he has a recurring villain who is basically the demon Legion. You come to recognize him through physical description and mannerisms, he appears in multiple stories under different names and faces and serves a cosmic Satan entity named The Crimson King.
I'd recommend The Long Walk as a starting point, then The Stand if you think you like his style. I would hold off on reading the Dark Tower series until you're immersed in his fictional universe a bit.
