Honestly the worst parts of the design are so easy to fix that I'm not sure they weren't added at the behest of somebody who felt there wasn't enough superfluous details (such as how it's unclear whether Marche is wearing boots or if he's wearing stockings with massive cuffs and shoes, and the stupid medallions on the joints in lieu of actual armor pieces like the pauldron)

Doned isn't a cripple, he has some unspecified illness he's been treated for and yet isn't bad enough to have him stuck to a hospital bed all day long.
Marche doesn't have it easy either, the only friends he has are the ones he made on his first day of school and whom he immediately introduces to his brother.
Moreover, their father is either dead or gone, and it's implied throughout the game that their mother has her hands full taking care of Doned to really have any time for Marche. Which he seems to understand and is probably the reason he's so mature for his ~12 years of age.
