Are we agree that Dark Souls 3 has the most powerful OST of the next gen?
>>343743301
lord of cinder fight makes me cry
>>343743606
The whole OST does that to me
Hardly. IMO the Souls' series OST is pretty weak. Only DS1 had memorable tracks, and only a few of them at that (Crystal Lake, Moonlight Butterfly, Sif, O&S). The music relies on the choir way too goddamn much, and there's next to no discernible melody in any of the tracks.
>>343743301
I myself have MGSV on repeat since it released. A shame the music level is so low in the game, plus it barely uses half of it, and it's poorly used.
When I think about it, it's funny how many failed/shitty games have killer OSTs: Brink, Assassin's Creed, Neotokyo, Guild Wars 2, Elite Dangerous, Torchlight 1/2... it's as if the OST is so awesome, those games couldn't possibly match it.
>>343743301
I prefer Bloodborne's.
It's fitting for the game, and great in parts, but not consistently enough.
Besides there are many better ones that both fit their games well, add a lot to the experience, and actually work as great pieces of music outside of the game.
>donkey kong tropical freeze
>crypt of the necrodancer
>ori and the blind forest
>witcher 3
Even within the series Bloodborne has a better soundtrack.

>I prefer Bloodborne's.
This. Although DaSIII had the problem of having its best track as the opening theme.
>>343743896
>The music relies on the choir way too goddamn much
It really gives the soundtrack the power it needs, though. Listen to the Demon's Souls soundtrack; most of the songs have no choir and they feel very empty and bare more often than not (also because of the use of solo instruments and because its SUPPOSED to be minimal, but still)
>and there's next to no discernible melody in any of the tracks.
that's because a lot of tracks use chromatic scales, which sound "out-of-tune" or wrong to most people's ears.
I dunno I just feel like you should talk to Hellkite on Youtube about this sort of thing, he'd explain to you why the Souls games sound the way they do.

But the main theme isn't Abyss Watchers theme anon

Abyss Watchers,Soul of Cinder,Deacons of the Deep, Lorian and Lothric's theme,Aldrich devourer of the Gods are actually better.
The main menu theme alone is fucking powerful

Honestly the extra vocals make it sound like a second stage if you took the original to be the first. Maybe they thought the butterfly-things weren't involved enough to truly be a second stage?

Why don't you post the actual best track from Old Hunters?

It has the best soundtrack of a generation of consoles that isn't even out yet? What do you even mean?
>>343744683
Maybe I've been choired-out, but I didn't get any sense of scale of "power" from those kinds of tracks. I feel like I've heard that kind of sensation so many times before, to the point that it just doesn't register anything for me when I hear it again.
DS3 did have some pretty sick string and piano arrangements, though. I just didn't like how they were so often drowned out by the choir and percussion. Soul of Cinder theme, in particular.
>>343744907
Pitch that shit up and you get the Ghost in the Shell intro music. Sort of.
>>343745451
>Le edgy Weaboo bait boss
Really not helping your case
>>343745481
I totally get that feeling too. The choir is just one of many solutions that they could use to make the music feel powerful. I think that they could definitely use a lot more brass in some tracks instead of choir, and that would work too.

>S-SOMEONE ON /v/ MADE AN IMAGE FOR IT SO NOW I'M CALLING IT EDGY IN A GAME WHERE LITERALLY EVERYTHING HAS ALIEN ABOMINATION BLOOD IN THEIR VEINS
That's cute, do you think Kirby is edgy too?
>>343744241
>Guild Wars 2
The worst soundtrack Jeremy Soule has ever composed. Half of it is recycled from GW1 and the rest is completely forgettable. The only decent track is Fear not this night.
Ah, and also the theme of the pact, which actually wasn't from him

To be honest, I think the Souls series terribly lacks music, and whatever it has isn't adapted.
I'm not asking for full blown orchestral music continually playing like in the TES series, but then I would nonetheless appreciate musical themes for each area, something minimal and ambient.
As for boss music, they're hardly fitting. Aside from some highlights, such as Abyss Watchers, the rest is far too loud and complex, and while their quality is debatable, you're not sitting in a chair listening to it, you're just trying to survive in the face of a boss that may rape your faggot face before the intro is over. It cannot be appreciated, and regardless of how "good" or "bad" it is, it is certainly "bad video game music".
Soundtracks like Diablo (Matt Uelmen) or Assassin's Creed (Jesper Kyd) are a great example of what would better fit the Souls series: overall minimal and ambiant music, oscillating slightly above and below background noise, and perfectly appreciable while playing.
Some nice examples of quality "modern" video game music:

Dark Souls isn't anywhere near that egregious, but it's that kind of emotional manipulation that irks me. I don't think anyone abuses the choir as much as Two Steps From Hell.
Souls game's music was never anything special. they have a few good tracks across the series, but overall, it's pretty much standard epic-orchestra-choir-stuff you hear everywhere in RPGs
>>343745597
it's a japanese game. i'd be worried if something like that wasn't in. still mechanically a good fight, wether you like the theme or not

>but then I would nonetheless appreciate musical themes for each area, something minimal and ambient.
This is really tricky, though. These games really force you to use your senses to stay alive. Keeping a watchful eye on potential traps and listening carefully for enemy activity is fundamental to the Souls experience. Music, even minimal/ambient, could distract from that. I'd love for some killer atmospheric music for the amazing environments in these games, but I wouldn't want it at the cost of that sense of tension and alertness.

Bloodborne and DeS have the best OST's in the series. DeS has a fairly unique sound to it with such a small orchestra and I feel BB has the best out of the newer styled soundtracks, especially in the DLC. Also it's setting seems more fitting of choirs and stuff, since Yharnam is about 60% cathederals.
Laurence's theme perfectly captures "religious leader who fell from grace" perfectly.

And while Living Failures isn't a great boss, the OST combined with thier "summoning the cosmos" move is awesome.

DeS's soundtrack is entirely synthezised

Bloodborne had 2 optional areas with ambient music and it worked really well at unsettling you because you wernt used to having music in normal gameplay. It was the two spookiest areas in the game, and the music made them spoopier.
Every area would be lame, but used sparingly it can work very well. Untended graves in DaS3 would have benefited from some ominous but not overbearing music in my opinion.

But Souls games DO have ambient sounds already, along with different noise-producing elements (bonfires, torches, wind, crashing waves...). They only need some slight more musicality.

Enjoy not knowing the difference between good music and good video game music then.
This thread is bad.
>>343743301
Fuck off mate.
DaS3 has a weak ass ost when compared to BB
Soul of Cinder, Lothric and Lothrian, Oceiros are the only good songs.
I really sort of wish they get Alex Roe to compose some songs for like their next games. He's pretty phenomenal. I wouldn't say he's underrated but not too well known.
