Honestly OP just find a game you love and dedicate yourself to it. In my experience, 100-200 hours clocked in a multiplayer shooter as an example will consistently put you at a reasonably good level of skill if not higher. I'm shit at RTS games on the other hand because I never played them, so I just accept it and try to get better. Thats half the fun of competitive stuff.

Pick a game.
Pick a game that currently has an active competitive scene.
GO TO A TOURNAMENT. LEARN TOURNAMENT STRATS.
Learning even ONE game's official tournament strats will make you so much better at games in general. Learning basic fundamentals of almost all games like baiting, punishing, map knowledge, game knowledge, learning the intricacies of frame data - all of these things will just help you THINK about video games in an entirely new way.
And be consistent at it! Play to be the very best. You have to shoot for the stars otherwise you're going to fall short of learning anything good. Try to be capable of taking a tournament in your chosen game.
You might be thinking

but I'm telling you right now that learning how a game is played when it's pushed to its limits will help you IDENTIFY when a game is fun for you and when it's not. And finally, learning to get over tournament nerves is actually a great skill to have in life in general. It can help you with anxiety, social awkwardness, even depression. I know it did for me.

I like to take advantage of opportunities like to experiment with the game trying to figure out what is the concept of doing well in it. I like learning about different games or mechanics so it's to measure yourself again and try to see if you be "good" again. Also great to practice teaching thing, so I try to express to myself like i were trying to teach it to somebody else to see if I actaully undertand the concept of what I'm doing. Even if I have a hard time getting back to it, I can experience the learning process again and I will ton of fun.
This concept is fucking great when end up frequently in a situation where you have to teach people about whatever, it keeps you warmed up! You can apply this with everything, game, guitar, baking, whatever. I love when that happens, it's like forgetting parts of games that you loved and being able to experience them again closely like your first time!

You could have played the game with a serious intention to be good at it and then realizing really late how pointless it is to be "good" at it because it's balanced like crap or it has a los of bullshit involved in it making it playing seriously a joke on itself.
