DDS' Expel reducing a percentage of your HP is a far better mechanic than having a palette swapped instant death, though.

Each character has a set of skills called Session skills. These are skills of a certain attribute that instantly trigger any time another characters lands an attack an enemy is weak against.

For example, Itsuki uses Zionga on an enemy weak to electricity. If enemy of the other party members on the field have a Session Skill that reacts to electricity, they attack.

So, Itsuki uses Zionga on an enemy, and Tsubasa (who has the Session Skill "Elec-Wind") follows through automatically behind him with a wind attack (like Zan).

You can combo it even further if another party member has "Wind-Flame", for example, as their Session Skill, which would follow Tsubasa's wind attack with a fire attack.

In one move you attacked 3 times. And later in the game, party members who are not active (that is, not on the field, but available to be swapped in) can come in and make the combo longer. It's possible to dish out over 5 consecutive attacks, all because you hit one guy's weakness.

And if you kill said guy mid combo? It continues onto the next guy. To say it's satisfying as fuck is an understatement.
