My main beef with these games is how unnatural the social aspects feel.
In stardew

>give her the bouquet, she accepts
>next day it rains
>get the mermaid pendant, next day give it to her, she accepts

Apparently they don't give a shit i'm going to be their son in law, the girl says the same shit she always does every day, she just keeps walking after i proposed to her, it just felt so weird. Am i just wearing rose colored glasses when thinking about harvest moon? was it the same situation? Because I don't remember it being that way. After you get married to the girl, she just sort of chills in your house and that's it? You don't really have any more events with her, you can't go out and hang out with her, nothing storywise really happens there after that. No more cutscenes.
I wish friendships and relationships weren't just jamming gifts down people's throats. I wish it felt more natural and was more conversation/activity based. Like imagine inviting someone to come fishing with you, so you both fish at the same time. It opens up dialogue while you're fishing and you're both building a relationship and getting fish at the same time. Invite someone to come into the mines with you, go on walks and having dialogue options, just a variety of activities that can occur that you do together. Rather than just deposting half your daily harvest into the bin and the other half is running around giving it to people in the town. I love these games but I just wish the social aspects of it were more natural and interesting. Do any of these games satisfy this craving? I've never played Rune factory but you guys keep mentioning it, it's definitely getting a high priority in my backlog now

That's not actually Harvest Moon. The people who used to localize Harvest Moon lost the rights because the Japanese publisher bought XSEED and stated using them to publish. But the old publisher kept the rights to the name "Harvest Moon" in the west and started developing their own shitty games using the name.

-Early game is a grind for better materials to make better tools, as well as for money to buy a more efficient farm. That's the point of farming games, but unless you cut a hog in the ass producing a lot of crops and have no fun for 15+ hours you're not going to have a lot of fun later on.
-The social aspect boils down to "give gifts to townspeople until they like you and give you their recipes and undying devotion". They don't have much interesting to say to you after a while, either.
-There's a cataloguing minigame for collecting everything in the game, including the random fish you have no control over when they bite your rod.
-The best girls/boys aren't marriable. No MILFs, no sassy desert maidens, no fantasy creatures.
-Dungeon crawling is a technique-less grind, too. Dash for the best swords you can find, and knock some heads around like you're playing Zelda ALttP. You'll only die if you try to tackle enemies instead of stabbing them.
SDV tries to keep a lot of balls in the air, and it falters in a number of places, but it's serviceable for a relaxed farming game.

Rune Factory 2 is some shit I tell you what.
So you start out as a male protagonist and all your tools are locked at tier 2 with no option to upgrade. You spend your time farming up enough resources to build a school for the local children and romancing one of the girls. Then you get married, have a child and promptly fuck off so the game can move to the next stage of the plot.
In the second stage, you play your child and start with rusted tools, you learn more recipes for upgrades through the school your father built.
I didn't hate it but it was kind of nuts.
Meanwhile, Rune Factory: Oceans is a bit of a odd one because you basically play both the male and female protagonist at the same time and then work out which one you actually are once the main plot is resolved. For this reason friendship is capped before you can start romances to avoid the odd fetish of having a girl trapped in a boys body watch the boy romance another girl.

This is something that annoys me in a lot of these games but isn't really a easy thing to resolve.
I sort of like the direction that Rune Factory went in by having a sort of daily cycle of dialogue relating to the season and upcoming events. They would also have a line talking about plot events or the current character event if it's ongoing.
RF3 and RF4 are comfy because of it, the village feels more alive and you see a certain amount of interaction between villagers. Downside is that eventually you will hit a loop in the dialogue and some of them might even repeat tutorial shit from the early spring seasons.
