I thought the UC games are okay and get too much praise and too much hate.

Good graphics only make a good game better, they don't make a bad game good. I would play games with sprites doodled by 5 years olds if it had the complexity of dwarf fortress and wizardry combined , preferably made by Troika.

They changed her face in 3 to more closely match her voice and mocap actor's face. This helped with the facial rigging since they didn't have to change all of her facial capture to fit the character's original face. They walked this back in 4 to a mix of the old face and the new face because fans didn't like her suddenly changing. They were going to do the same thing to Drake but felt they couldn't since he was the face of the series and they knew fans would be mad if they did. They didn't realize how much people loved Elena though.

I was never a fan of Rockstar's games but honestly, though GTAIII was a little dated visually, it was still impressive in certain ways, like the weather affects, the rain creating a certain atmosphere, random shit like NPCs crashing into each other or starting gun fights with one another. I was very surprised to see that sort of thing in an early PS2 game.

Even still, you must be a newfag or underage. Plenty of PS2 games, like DMC1 and 3, Fatal Frame 1-3, SH 2 and 3, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, ZoE 2, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and so on still look fucking great.

The whole time playing TW3 I couldn't get out of my mind how much better things actually looked in 2. The atmosphere was also so different, but I guess that's to be said about all 3.

Making a good art style does take effort, but it has nothing to do with "advancing graphics", it's using your currently existing tools to make something look good. Again you're comparing our current standard against itself, instead of looking at where we were, vs where we are. The N64 couldn't make smooth gradients like this. Even on the gamecube, the gameplay was limited because they literally couldn't render the ocean fast enough for faster sailing.

And if companies could get away with selling double the transistors at double the price, they would. The incentive for consumer products to upgrade was because in order to remain competitive, they needed on one-up the other company. Which means providing better graphic capability at an affordable price.

Budget increase, not necessarily because of graphics, but because of the artistic freedom that graphics has allowed. It used to be that you can be a programmer, and do graphics yourself. Now you need to hire college graduates living in san diego to do art for you. Even stylish games require a lot of work. Oh sure, realism is time intensive, but so is rendering good stylized graphics. You want your anime waifu to look her best? That takes skill. Skill you need to pay someone a good salary for.

Without the tools to render better graphics with ease, you're gimping artists, limiting what styles are actually available to them.

I'd say that the best textures haven't improved much, but I'd say overall quality has. There's less jarring disconnect between head and clothing models for example.

Hair rendering, including stubble, has also improved, meaning that doesn't need to be part of the texture as much.

That image is not making a convincing case for anisotropic filtering: just look at the crazy aliasing going on in the top-left and top-right corners. The whole point of texture filtering like this is to reduce aliasing!

As for Uncharted 4, it seems like "modern graphics" just means "wallowing in the uncanny valley." Screenshots of Uncharted 4 (and other games people have posted here to "compete" with it) are actually painful to look at. Like I'll get eye strain from their horribleness.
