You never ever trade like this. If you have a tradeable gift, then you either trade with someone else who has a tradeable copy as well, or you make them send first.
And never believe someone has a key just because they say so. There's literally no way to prove they even have one. They could show you an email where they bought it, but then how do you know the code wasn't used?
Either way, the damage is done. You can at least take a valuable lesson from this. Never trust strangers online
