Great music, particularly for indie chiptune stuff.
The combat system was varied enough to stay interesting and fun throughout the whole thing. I really liked the blend of RPGs and WarioWare, and hope that some other developer or Toby himself takes it a bit further in a future game. Make all encounters as exciting and different as the bosses were mechanically.
The two skeletons, Metaton and Undyne were pretty entertaining characters. Papyrus was the only one who really stood out as something special and the game relied too much on its "befriend the boss of this segment, date them, then move onto a new boss character" formula but they managed to keep me hooked throughout the initial playthrough.
It's not a perfect game. The genocide playthrough is steaming garbage, the puzzles might as well not be there, the plot needed gets weird whenever the Asriel/Chara shit rears its ugly head, Flowey's save shenanigans were really underutilized and Alphys was the worst character of 2016. But it was a solid 8/10 and I paid 10 bucks for it.

It introduces new mechanics that get discarded before anyone could get annoyed with them. Pretty much all NPCs are more fleshed out than most JRPG have. The gameplay system itself is pretty novel and the boss fights are well designed. Much like the game mechanics the flavor text with mobs never gets repetitive because you're not encountering the same ones over and over.

How does that make any sense? The game deserves the accolades it gets by the sheer virtue of having them in the first place. You'd have an argument if the reviews were bought off or something like that but that's obviously not the case. Just because you don't like something as much as other people doesn't invalidate their opinions about the game. I didn't think Undertale was goty 2015 (MH4U was) but that doesn't mean someone who did think it was is objectively wrong.
